Default tires for snow plowing

I just bought a 1993 pickup truck to use for plowing and it needs 4 new tires. I was wandering if any of you fellow Mainers new of what tires work best for plowing. Thanks!

After using snow tires for over 50 years, the absolute best I have ever used are Firestone Winterforce with studs. I do a lot of driving on unplowed or seldom plowed roads in my work.

I'll second NMLM's recommendation for the Studded Winterforce. Best tire on a truck I have ever used, bar none.

If you don't want the studded tires, the next best ones I have used are the Blizzak W965, VERY close to the studded Winterforce in actual operation (I never would have believed it, but when we moved to MI they don't allow studs, and I went with these and was amazed really).

Round.

Round tires work far better than those square ones

I plow my driveway, my neighbors' driveways and the 1/2 mile of private road from here to the town road. I also drive the dozen miles to my commercial property and plow that access road as well as the large parking lot, then on another three miles to the quarry, and plow the 1/2 mile of rough dirt road that services that. I have a GMC 3/4 ton pickup and run all season tires...right now they are Firestone something orothers that came on it, and they work fine.

If I was doing a LOT of driving on dirt roads where ice is a serious concern, I would use studded winter tires, but the vast majority of my normal driving is on paved roads and only the plowing is on gravel.

If you're on a budget the Good Year Wranglers from Walmart work good. P235R15's about $55 a piece.

I'm plowing here all winter long...if it has snowed! Rest of the time, I'm on bare road, so all-season radials work for me. BUT - the truck I use for plowing is 4WD. That's another thing to consider. Maybe I get along fine with all-season's because of the 4WD.
