I am usually one of the loudest voices speaking about wasteful government spending, but speaking as an artist I know that the grants and fellowships that the Maine Arts Commission offers keep many productive artists teaching, working and supporting our local communities. Many of these grants mandate involvement in community or educational institutions.
I was one of the first to gripe at the Wegman photos in Kennebunk mainly because I know him to be a NY artist, not a local. Not all the spending is so frivolous when you consider that local artists are also local labor.

Now that's something I forgot. They did close some rest areas didn't they?

$100,000 for those three dog pictues is just plain stupid. You could pay two shovel leaners salaries for that.

I usually stop at the very first rest/welcome area about two miles in when you come north on 95 from NH. Is that one still open? It was 3 weeks ago when I went up to close the camper for the winter.

I must begrudgingly admit I do so admire the art work that Arizona Department of Transportation ( ADOT) has set up under bridges and on highways. It is fresh, clean and very attractive!

I appreciate art too but don't appreciate money that is supposed to go to roads being spent on art. Then we're hit with this:

Question 6: Bond Issue
(Part A of Ch. 414, Public Laws of 2009)

“Do you favor a $71,250,000 bond issue for improvements to highways and bridges, airports, public transit facilities, ferry and port facilities, including port and harbor structures, as well as funds for the LifeFlight Foundation that will make the State eligible for over $148,000,000 in federal and other matching funds?”

Someone isn't spending the money appropriately now and they want more.

I haven't seen them. Is it the one where they play pool or the poker one? Sorry
