Yes that's who it was. I think he was a light weight if memory serves. He washed up quickly. There used to be signs as you came into Lewiston saying "Home of Joey Gamache" He was Grand Marshall in the Clam Festival Parade one year in Yarmouth.

My man from Sacramento, Tony "The Tiger" Lopez, gave Gamache his first loss in Portland. Gamache then went on to win his next 7 bouts. I believe Arturo Gatti was the biggest fight for him.

Joey suffered brain damage after a fight with Arturo Gatti. He had a lawsuit againt the NYSAC for allowing the fight after Gatti weighed in overweight for the fight. He settled for two mill. Gatti was found dead days before he was to testify in the case.

Wow! That's an interesting twist Msina! So Joey was sitting pretty for a while, eh? Wonder where he is now? Suppose he's still in fat city or blew the wad?

He was working as an assistant trainer for a while in Vegas, that was a few years ago. Joey was known as a class act, an all American good guy. Boxing isn't what it used to be.

I heard that about him too. He had a lot of respect as a person not just a boxer. He seemed like a nice guy to me.

Retired boxing champion Joey Gamache reached a $2 million settlement on Tuesday of his lawsuit against a bank.

Gamache had contended that United Kingfield Bank of Bangor had backed off a commitment to lend him $285,000 to open a restaurant in Lewiston, costing him his life savings.
The lawsuit with the NYSAC is still unsettled.

A former world champion in boxing, Gamache is still slim and boyish-looking at 43, and he is often recognized on the streets of Manhattan, where he now lives. Still, Gamache is reluctant to speak about his past.

Have you considered Mechanic Falls? It is small and I like it. There are a few stores, post office, gas station, place with country music and dancing on the weekends, ice cream take out open in the summer, small restaurant. It's been a few years since I was there...it's worth considering.
