It's a sad time when a dog has to be put down. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Your dog surely did get to heaven (by way of Maine).

Great idea Austin! Sunday, it's part of the Pet Forum in CD. It's worth the trip.

Thank you, friends. It's a tough morning without him today and to have found your sweet and thoughtful notes here really helped. I'll go check out the Rainbow Bridge.

My heart goes out to you. I'm sure the house feels very empty without your companion. Putting down a pet is such a hard decision, but I'm sure you know you did the right thing by him. They rely on us to do that and it's the last thing we can do for them. You're so right that Maine is a great place for dogs. We Mainers are conscientious about spaying and neutering so that our shelters never have to put down dogs because of overcrowding. In fact, many Maine shelters rescue dogs from southern kill shelters and bring them up here. If any of you are in the vicinity of Lewiston, drop by the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society. It's a wonderful shelter. And you can find truly great vets in Maine.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Speaking as someone who's owned many dogs over the years, I know it's very hard to say goodbye.

WoolwiTch has a great point about the shelters. Personally, I'm partial to mutts who need a good home . Very rarely have these "colorful characters" let me down either personality-wise or in terms of health.

So sorry, Sunday1. I'm sure he's on the heavenly plain with my dear kitty and all our other family of friends. It's always so hard.

It is unfortunate how short our pets' life spans are compared with ours. Cherish all the wonderful years you shared with your beloved friend and know what a happy life he lived with you.

Thanks everyone. I see that Coastal humane society is in Brunswick, Mermaid. Thanks - that's my neck of the woods as you know and it may be a possibility - we'll see.

And you, Maineah - thanks for making me laugh on a really crummy day (with that new by-line of yours.) Verrry funny!
