Maine is getting no easier this year. I'm a certified teacher with 12 years experience who took some time off from the classroom when my marriage became unmanagable. Now, the only job I can find within 40 miles is as an ed tech, making $7,000 per year. I'm about to apply for food stamps. It's demoralizing in the extreme and if my ex-husband weren't taking me back to court (another tragic aspect of Maine is its rural family court system, misogynistic, patriarchal, ossified in the 19th century--no one should move here with anything less than a perfect spouse) I would be spending every extra minute looking for work in other, warmer, more economically viable parts of the country. Or maybe other countries.
I've really had it. Congratulations for getting out when you could.

I love Kerrville. We stop there every time we go through, which is often. Love Texas, too, but can't take living on the border anymore. And the move will get me as close to the perfect spouse as anybody can be without getting a divorce. Hubby's job has begun to interfere with our relationship because of the hours. It's about the only thing that puts a strain on us. New job is similar, just much better hours and we get to return to civilization.

This is never good. I quit my favorite job because of the long hours keeping me from the family.

Eh, my first full time year "teaching" was as a study hall monitor--kind of the foot-in-the-door job. Sometimes I count it; sometimes I don't.
I didn't do a continuity search on the forum to make sure I stayed true to any previous claims. Jeez.

family should always be first, and keep in mind, most men would rather be with the family than working,, between taxes, energy costs, and health insurance costs, im also working many more hours,,,not by choice,,
most men are hard-wired to be good providers for thier families, and yes its a trafe-off,,not just with time with the family,,,but wanting a nice house/things,
a close friend recently told his wife,,"we should sell this house, buy something smaller out-right, and trade down the vehicles, stop the vacations,
and he wouldnt have to work so hard,,,have more time, and probly live longer,, she (his wife) stopped complaining
please dont take this personally, its not directed towards you,,,but life is a trade-off

I have been thinking about moving my family to Maine. I live in Ohio and there just are not any jobs or a future for my children here. I was thinking about maybe Portland or South Portland. Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks

Maine has less for jobs or a future than Ohio does. I don't know why you would think Maine would be the answer to that problem. No offense meant, it's just reality.

People truly do NOT move to Maine for more jobs, better pay or increased opportunity. Maine is a wonderful place, but people move there for a completely different set of reasons!
Do your research and choose wisely based on your true needs, wants and expectations. Good luck to you in your search. Remember that no-matter what life you seek....it's out there....somewhere.
