Another thing to keep in mind with imported booze (like grey goose) is that you're paying a hefty import tax and that's built into the price. I bought a bottle of grey goose in Paris for about $17 dollars so we're paying the difference in taxes and import markups here. Cold Rivers price is more reasonable to me given all that. Goose used to be my favorite until cold river. I can't wait to try blueberry, that sounds fantastic.

The Portland area is nice, but it's really not a major player economically. Sure, it's the biggest city in Maine, but it's less than 1/2 the size of Dayton, Ohio and BARELY 1/4 the size of Akron Ohio. It's super tiny; comparably sized cities in Ohio would be Springfield or Hamilton. The good news is, crime is very low here and it's less expensive than most of the Northeast, but Portland is probably not a much better bet for jobs than anywhere in Ohio.
If you're willing to live off of less money to benefit from lower crime, friendly neighbors, and beautiful scenery, then a move to Portland may not be a bad idea. If you're looking to move here for an equal or better job, then I would seriously recommend doing heavy research at one of the job search sites and calling places to try and lock something up in advance. It's not the land of economic opportunity up here, and I would suggest having something locked up before you come out hoping for a better life.

i just joined city-data this morn, Christmas eve day.
i've been reading this particular thread for months + have so enjoyed it!
so much information that you wonderful people have so freely given!
i lived on Beals in 2000 + not a day has gone by in 8 yrs that i have not thought about how i can get up there permanantly!! my Beloved state of MAINE calls my soul always. when i hear the word "Maine" in public, my ears perk right up!!
my circumstances aren't the best. i have kidney disease as well as a rare "gene-related" lung disease, which was only diagnosed 4 yrs ago. although i am considered "disabled" i am a whiz on the computer; web design, computer graphic art. i am willing, able, eager, dying to find this kind of work up in my downeast/midcoast/somewhere place.
i know i can find a way to make it work for me, before i get too old to make the move! i am 45 now :-)
although i am not close with my "adopted" sister, i admire as well as envy her. she is a CPA + made the move to Durham, Maine a year ago. she got a cushy job as a CPA for her Beloved store LLBean :-) i am happy for her, as she had her own home custom built + just moved in a few months ago. as we are not close, i will probably not get up there to visit her new home.
i do, however, have a wonderful car now, which, by NO coincidence, lived it's life before me, where else?? the state of MAINE of course :-))) how poetic is THAT??? somehow i wasn't even shocked when i read the history of my car<3
oh i want this so badly. any advice is greatly appreciated!!
please have a beautiful holiday season up there, you are the luckiest + most Blessed folks of all<3

^I like Auburn. It's not exactly Pleasantville to say the least, but it's not a bad town. you will be close to services there (sizable schools, hospitals, shopping) and next to the highway.
Keep in mind, Auburn is really Lewiston's suburb. Lewiston is a depressed old mill-town. there are a large number of Somali refugees in the area and a pretty large number of people living below the poverty line. One thing that comes with lower income sometimes is petty crime. There are some thefts, drugs, and prostitution in the area, but don't think it runs rampant because it doesn't. The crime rate in that area is actually lower than in Portland (which is a VERY safe/ low-crime city as well).
Auburn is a town that will offer you a good number of options in terms of the type of housing you want. There are multi-families, suburban single families and rural single families, so you have options to choose from.
I can't give you information on the schools because I simply don't know. Check Great Schools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community to get a better idea. Good luck, I hope you enjoy it here.

Thanks for the thoughts. My mom died just before I got married, so Kerrville was off my radar.
I'm spending my snow day looking for teaching work in Arizona. Hot and sunny indeed.
