I've always been very fond of John Prines' tune "Paradise" (you may know it better as Muhlenberg County), and wanted to do a version of it with a Maine spin. Well, I wrote my version of it a long time ago, and it kinda got away from me a little. Anyways, the melody is exactly the same, but the words are WAY different.

Here 'tis:

When I was a child
My diet consisted
Of beans and potatoes,
Macaroni and cheese.
When we wanted meat
Us children would clamor
“Dad take the truck out
And hit a deer, please”.

(Chorus)
And Daddy, can you get me
Out of Washington county?
With luck I'd be free
From the whole State of Maine.
The air may be clean,
But my wallet's picked cleaner.
This livin' on pine cones
Can drive you insane.

The summers' we'd spend
Preparin' for winter.
The winters' we'd spend
Preparin' to die.
We'd know it was spring
When the mud ate our Buick
And it wouldn't dry off
'Till the 4th of July.

(Chorus)
And Daddy, can you get me
Out of Washington county?
With luck I'd be free
From the whole State of Maine.
The air may be clean,
But my wallet's picked cleaner.
This livin' on pine cones
Can drive you insane.

Jobs here are scarce,
But we've back roads a-plenty,
So any work you can find
Has a one-hour drive.
And when it comes to your wage
The formulas' simple:
Just five percent less
Than you need to survive.

(Chorus)
And Daddy, can you get me
Out of Washington county?
With luck I'd be free
From the whole State of Maine.
The air may be clean,
But my wallet's picked cleaner.
This livin' on pine cones
Can drive you insane.

Well, some like the coast,
And some like the mountains.
And some like the forest,
Though I've no idea why.
The Maine I like best
Is in my rear-view mirror
I'm tellin' you folks
Kiss my “ayuh “ goodbye.

(Chorus)
And Daddy, can you get me
Out of Washington county?
With luck I'd be free
From the whole State of Maine.
The air may be clean,
But my wallet's picked cleaner.
This livin' on pine cones
Can drive you insane.
