I am planning a vacation this summer or fall to Maine and the other New England States.

I'm trying to decide between shelling out the money for an all-enclusive guided bus tour originating from here in Charlotte (very expensive), or traveling up there myself, and then booking a bus tour for a few days with a local company up there.

Does anyone have any experience with this, or know a good guided bus tour company there?

Of course, for the prices I'm seeing online, I could save a lot of money by just renting a car and planning my own little "tour of Maine" and surrounding areas, but I just don't feel like doing all that planning and driving. I want to see the area and relax at the same time! Never taken a bus tour before.

Any suggestions? I'll ask in the Travel Forum as well.

I'm short of time to search on this website for Maine tours specifically but try this:

Cyr Northstar Tours - Maine Office of Tourism

We took one of their trips to NY, and they did a great job.

Well, for us we flew in from Texas to Portland. Rented a car and visited Rockland, Camden, up the coast to Acadia and also Isle au Haut. I couldn't imagine making that trip on a tour bus. It is such a relaxing drive anyway and there are so many quaint and out-of-the way lodging spots. If you want more input about the itinerary let me know.

Default Mdi

Remember, MDI is extremely crowded in June and July. The coast is pretty all the way up to Lubec.

Actually, the coast is pretty past Lubec - like Eastport.

I think I am going to aim for September, late September. I appreciate all your suggestions. I may ask for more input when I really get down to planning my itinerary. Thanks all, once again!

You really won't get the full effect unless you see crowded with tourists and summer people compared to when most of them leave. The visitors are fewer and fewer once students are expected to be back in school, but then some leave later if they don't have school-age children. By the end of October, things are pretty much back to what you might call off season normal--at least in the Ellsworth-MDI-Acadia National Park area. For some, the next several months (November-June) are their favorite season.
