Just reread 2 of my favorite Maine mysteries by David A Crossman, born on Vinalhaven. I esp like his 2 novels starring Winston Crisp entitled A Show of Hands and the sequel : In the Dead of Winter.
Great depiction of island living and vernacular circa 1950's!
I also love Linda Greenlaw and Sarah Graves's Maine mysteries!
Any other great recommendations out there?

Moughie, thank you for the Maine author recommendations. I will look forward to reading those you suggested. I am an eclectic reader - everything from Kant & Ovid to, ready, Harlequin's softer romances! Go figure...
But - I particularly love Maine authors, and especially those writing in the '50's. Sarah Orne Jewett; Elisabeth Ogilvie; and Ruth Moore (for academic nuts, here's a link to a good article on Maine author Ruth Moore: Homesick For That Place: Ruth Moore Writes About Maine). Actually, before I'd even visited Maine, it was reading the works of these three Maine authors that made it impossible for me not to want to be here!
I've said it before elsewhere - somewhere - Ruth Moore's epigraph in the Preface to "The Weir" sums up my Maine experience. She writes, "That was the place that you were homesick for, even when you were there."

Reason: vanity
She writes, "That was the place that you were homesick for, even when you were there."
Great quote!
The Phoenix public library extensive interlibrary loan system hold many Maine author titles but not Ruth Moore's books, unfortunately. I will have to get her books through Alibris.
