Just curious: what was the "everything" you missed so much? (I'm seriously asking; having lived in Portland, Boston, and PA).
We are two hours from Bangor or Fredericton (a great city; capital of NB). It's three hours if you live further north. We also have lots to do here. And we have the internet and overnight shipping!
Fort Kent is a bit like a French version of "Northern Exposure", granted. But I like it. It has UMFK, a decent hospital, Maine Winter Sports Center (yearround stuff), Lonestome Pines ski venue, access to the Allagash and Canada, lots of events (such as the Can Am 250), and more. The Valley will be co-hosting the World Acadian Congress in 2014. It will bring tens of thousands of folks from all over the world to the area.
