I am looking for a 3 br. house to rent in the Old Town area for the school year 2010-2011. I have two children and four rescue dogs...must be able to take dogs and cats...acreage and private would be good. Will travel 15-20 minutes to get to classes if needed.

I would check with local realtors.

The four dogs are going to be hard. While I don't live near you, I can tell you I might rent my house to one small dog or an older dog, but not four dogs and certainly not four rescue dogs---without special considerations in the contract for inspections and extra money against the possible repairs from scratching and chewing and defecating animals. I have one rescue lab, and he was a bit hard on the house at first.

I'd rent my house to someone with rescue dogs. I have 3 very active Welsh Corgis and one of them is a rescue. I live way too far from Old Town but there are people who will rent to people with several dogs, I'm one of them.

These guys have a house for rent in Old Town, and take dogs -- of course I don't know how many they'd accept.

I've found that most every home will accept dogs, so I really wouldn't worry about that at all.

Maine craigslist is ideal for rentals - I see homes in the Old Town/Bangor area for rent all the time.

We had some difficulty finding a rental that would accept dogs when we first moved here. We have 2 beagles that we crate when we aren't home, which we communicated to the potential landlord. I hope you have an easier time than we did.

I think the question is not JUST One Dog. Its when you have multiple dogs and cats that issues of potential cleanliness and damage take place. Multiple dogs and cats running free in a house can get excited and feed on each others excitement and really do a number to the inside of a house.

Now if they were crated during the day, that might help, but having been a renter, and being a landlord, I have to say that I tend not to believe the renter. If my renters damage the house, they can walk away, and even if I take their deposit, its still a big pain to bring the house back up to spec for the next renter---or in my case, my own habitation.

We've lucked out and reduced the rent 300 bucks during Maine's heavy heating months so we could keep them. They understand they are simply renting until we retire next summer, 2011, and can move up. If they actually buy a house this spring we will try to deal with the mortgage ourselves without the renter so we don't have to have one.

Well I have multiple dogs and I never found any problem renting, but I suppose it's because I rent a home. Apartments and condos will generally not like pets from what I've seen- probably more because of other tenants/lack of a private yard perhaps, but the poster is looking for a home. Also the ads I've seen have been much more against cats than dogs.
