Who here has had good luck so far? I went out and fished off the local pier yesterday with no luck, though I did spy a few nearby, they wouldn't take the bait. Of course, it was late (after 8) and high tide, so they may have already eaten their fill.

Mackerel fishing this early? Wouldn't even think of it until July.

They might not be in Lubec but there are plenty of mackerel around Casco Bay now. I agree with crb01 the mackerel are just about gone from this area in July. I caught 6 in half an hour on Cousin's Island yesterday and my buddy caught a dozen this morning on Little John's Island. We give some away and freeze the rest for striper bait.
They were taking **** and daredevil spoons.
We're also catching stripers now too. Plenty of fish in the slot size range so far. I saw a guy lose a really big one yesterday by wrapping itself around a mooring chain. He wasn't too happy but that's fishing!

Well I went down to the wharf this evening and fished a couple of hours and came home with two. Enough for a lunch tomorrow, anyway.

One fellow had about 6 or 7 that he had caught.

My son has been catching Mackerel for a couple weeks now and using it for Striper bait. He pulled one out last night that had a huge Lamprey eel attached to it. The Mackerel wasn't a pretty site.

Here is a very easy and tasty way to cook striped bass, bluefish or even mackerel.
Filet the big fish. On bluefish remove the dark meat from the spine area.
Thinly slice lemons and onions and arrange on a piece of aluminum foil. Place the filet or cleaned, scaled, mackerel on the onions and lemons. Put another layer of onions and lemons on the fish, a little salt and pepper, and wrap tightly in the foil.
Punch a couple of holes in the foil for drainage and place on a medium hot grill for 10 minutes a side.
The natural juices in the fish steam it to perfection and the onions and lemon add a very complimentary taste. Great with your favorite chilled white wine! You will make this over and over! Even kids love it!
