afterall that has been in the news lately about Taneytown, can anyone argue that possibly there IS a problem with intolerance and acceptance. I think not.

NYMD, that is exactly what made me cringe when I saw the headlines. People see that and figure everyone in the area is just the same. You'll run into kooks no matter where you are.

If I may ask, what has been going on in the headlines? (I find the online versions of the Sun and the CC Times to be too cumbersome to try to read.)

Basically, a councilman wanted a resolution passed to declare the town a non-sanctuary for illegal immigrants. He's the same one that wanted a resolution to make English the official language of Taneytown.
The thing is, you're passing a resolution stating that the town will abide by federal law. Which is fine. But, it makes the town look racist. However, Gregory Kane had an article in the Sun which was a very good read, and made me re-think my position.

My eyes have seen conning of the law -- baltimoresun.com
The link to the Greg Kane article. I don't always agree with him, but he always makes me think. Sometimes even, ponder.

I love the intensity of this conversation! I see valid points on both sides. I actually grew up in Pasadena, which can be considered a "slummy" town in MD (and is usually being called that by residents in the town) but it was too crowded for me so I bought a place in Westminster (near Taneytown) last year. What I've found is this: no matter where you go in MD, and in most states for that matter, you're going to experience these types of situations. People who are don't accept others views and lifestyles, or generally have a problem with putting their foot in their mouth and saying something really rude about, for example, someone else's kids. My parents are from NYC so when I was growing up they raised me with this air of "we're better/more educated/more PC/classier than these Marylanders" but what I came to find is that you can't let others effect you with their words and actions. People may say or do things that are racist, or maybe just live their lives differently than you, but that doesn't make them a bad person or any less of a person than you. I do agree that if you feel the town you're in doesn't offer much in the way of things to do, that can be a problem. Everyone wants to have a sense of belonging in their community, but its hardly logical to say that there is a town out there that fits a person perfectly. Also, as a teacher of middle school students, I know first hand how kids can be cruel to other kids. This is NOT specific to Taneytown or MD. Basically, you gotta do what you gotta do.

Remember the wrestler from the 80's called Hillbilly Jim? He was from Taneytown. Hope that helps.

Hello...I live in Pasadena (sorry, I know this is a Taneytown thread) and was wondering what you mean by "slummy." The root word for that is "slum" and that's something I would definitely never attribute to Pasadena...it's a mix of people and neighborhoods from a blue-collar to an affluent nature and somewhere in between. It's hard to describe other than that it's a typical community in an unincorporated section of Anne Arundel County, like many others in Maryland, with not that much character one way or the other--probably because we don't have a real sense of identity that an actual city or town might have.
Anyway, we like it here in Pasadena; not "quaint" like I'm sure Taneytown is, from what I been reading here. In any case, whether in Pasadena or Taneytown, it sure would be nice if everyone just find contentment and peace and not be a source of stress for others by being rude, judgmental, or ignorant (the golden rule). Oh, well...one can hope.
