I have been through there alot but never experienced the town other than stopping at the Sheetz or going to McDonalds. From what I saw, Taneytown truck me as a typical Northern MD rural farm town. No real sprawl to speak of, just fields and old houses and the occasional new housing development. My friends from Westminster always made fun of Taneytown as the backwater of Carroll County, similar to what people in Frederick say about Thurmont. It always seemed pretty nice to me.

Very backwoods, "redneck", small-town feel.

But within the past 5-10 years seems to be the hotspot for bedroom communities. The housing/developments have gone up considerably most recently although there are still a bunch of local rednecks there. Doesn't discourage a lot of people. Then again it is very rural and prices are lower as compared to the rest of carroll county. It all depends what you are looking for.

Default Opinon of Taneytown

I would never typically post in something as this, but I have STRONG opinions about Taneytown.

We have lived in this town for a little over 2 years due to the fact that yes, the cost of housing is much lower than basically anywhere else in the state besides Western MD.
We were able to get much more of a home vs. going to Frederick County or other parts of Carroll County.
Bad decision on our part.

There are wonderful, wonderful people in this little town, HOWEVER, there are many more not so wonderful, uneducated, prejudiced people than anywhere we have ever lived. Diversity is something not accepted here and ignorance is all around.
"They" try to portray this town as a quaint, lovely place to raise a family....
Not so true.
We have a wonderful neighborhood fortunately, however, it does not make up for the lack of class in the rest of the area.
All of this in addition to the fact that there is absolutely NOTHING to do for younger families (besides visit the library and occasional community event) make up the reason why we are re-locating our family to another area.
It is not the place where we want our children to grow up.

Again, we have met many wonderful people here , it is actually very sad that a place like this still exists with a beautiful surrounding as the mountains, the very elegant Antrim House,etc.... it seems a shame to have all this beauty and such ignorance in the same place.

Good Luck to anyone moving here, we are out of here.....

I agree with the poster above me. I've lived in Carroll County (Westminster) for 21 years (minus my 4 year stint at WVU) and you're going to find prejudice in pretty much all of Carroll County. It's predominately white compared to other suburbs of Baltimore (Owings Mills is black, Pikesville is Jewish, Columbia has many Asians.. not trying to be unPC, sorry I offend anyone) and it's no lie that the Klan does exist (or atleast did until several years ago..?).
Taneytown might be the worst place for prejudice in Carroll County. I'd say Westminster and Eldersburg might be a little more accepting, possibly Mt. Airy too. Overall though, prejudice is everywhere in Carroll County (I'm white upper-middle class, BTW, so I'm not speaking from personal experiences) but IMO Taneytown is the worst.

I subbed at the local TT elementary school several years back, and I would not send my kids there. Fir the last 30 minutes of the day, the whole routine of leaving was very long and drawn out with lots of lining up and no talking. One kid was talking to me, the sub, and another teacher told him quite harshly to be quiet. I found it rude. Then, a couple years later, the fifth grade math teacher was arrested for molesting kids --boys --- putting his hand in their pockets pretending to look for something. After the first kid came forward, the flood gates opened. This teacher had been doing his pocket trick for generations -- parents who attended the school as kids came forward.

Wowwww that's horrible. Let's also not forget the FSK teacher/student (I believe she was a sub?) sex incident several years ago.
