Hagerstown to Hancock takes about 40 minutes, it is a pretty drive. There r places to live in Hagerstown, or Huyetts whiich is further out, on your way to Hancock but still close to Hagerstown. Clear Spring is about half way, between Hancock and Hagerstown, Md. We know familes that like it there and find the schools good. It is a quaint looking town.
North High is pretty typical of High Schools, a diverse mix of kids. We liked it.
Hancock is a lot more rural. U will see a cross section of kids from a rural background, as well as those newer to the area, or who live closer into town. One of our kids went to a magnet and met kids from Hancock in class. Some had a typical high school frame of reference, some were more rural or isolated. All were great kids and added to fun discussions.

Hi! I know this posting was about a year ago... but we are moving from Michigan to teach in Frederick County. My husband is teaching at Walkersville High and I am at Urbana middle. We originally wanted to live in Hagerstown- not expensive in MAryland standards and we could get a lot more for our money (two bathrooms!!!). BUT now we think we have to live in Frederick to cut down on the commute. Do you agree?
I read the above posts... but we have to go East of Frederick. I have heard that I will have much more of a problem than my husband since he is going north.... and I am going Southeast to Ijamsville
Opinions, anyone???
THANK YOU!

Walkersville High is easy to get to from north/east Frederick city. Just up rt 26/194 and traffic will never be too bad. Urbana middle, it really depends on where you live. If you live outside of the city of Frederick, to the east, like New Market or Spring Ridge, your commutes will be almost the same distance. But yes, a commute south to Urbana/Ijamsville will be more traffic, but nothing like if you kept going south into Montgomery County. Also, transportation wise you will save money not commuting from Hagerstown, but depending on how much you are willing to spend, some areas are pretty pricey in Frederick.

I would definitely picked Hagerstown as the commute is not bad at all. After a long day of work, a little drive before home will also help to destress. Plus you get more bang for your $$$. There are many alternate route to get to Frederick from hagerstown apart from I-70 as well.
We used to live close to the community college and commute to Frederick and Gaithersburg for work. Not bad at all.

lvmycj- What are the alternate routes? So they take a shorter amount of time (considering traffic on a normal day on 70)?
histmaj- thank you! I agree. I won't be going into Montgomery County, thank goodness. In Frederick, we have raised our budget a lot to find a somewhat comparable place to the ones we found in Hagerstown... We found Jefferson chase (which are now condos) which might not be in the best area- we are renting. We also found The apartments at sunset and Crystal Park apartments.

Jess, the alternate routes is Route 40, beautiful drive. And by the time you hit Frederick at the Golden Mile exit (never pay attention to the exit number, sorry), you are pretty much good to go anywhere from there.
I do not drive fast and even for me, it took me about 20 - 25 minutes to get to Frederick. (From where I used to live which was the Exit 32 in Hagerstown). You will generally get heavier traffic on Fridays, the day before long holiday weekends, and during bad winter (not much though during the last 2 winters).

Thanks lvmycj! Now, if gas prices went down, I would be all set!
I really appreciate your time and will look more into living in hagerstown

Try Thurmont in Frederick County
Hello,
You should try to find something in Thurmont which is in the northern part of Frederick County. I just moved from there to be closer to my job. Thurmont has affordable housing and you could get to Frederick in about 30 minutes for the city and about 40 minutes for anything south of the city. Just remember though if you have to go on 270 your communte time will multiply by to about maybe an hour and ten mintues depending on when you leave and traffic during the weekdays.
