Are you driving during rush hour on a weekday or as recreation on a weekend? It makes a big difference.

The best way to get into DC from Frederick would be to drive to Shady Grove metro stop outside of Gaithersburg. The drive there would take about 30 minutes, with no traffic on I-270. Traffic (which is very common) would double that time, at least. Once you are on the metro it would be about 45 minutes get to the stuff you wanted to see. If you are planning to drive all the way in it will probably take longer (at least on weekdays) because of traffic on I-495.

With no traffic, about an hour. I would recommend 270 to 495 to GW Pkwy to the Roosevelt Bridge and then down Constitution. Smithsonian parking will be an issue though. The metro from Shady Grove is a good option too.

^ 1 Hour? No. 30-45 mins without traffic is what it really is. It isn't actually that bad

I've driven this trip at least 60 times, having lived in Frederick and doing work in DC, and it takes an hour. Figure in your departure time, trip down 270->495, hopping off the GW parkway, plus parking. A trip from McLean into DC via the GW parkway most places in northwest takes 30 minutes once you find parking.

If it's a weekend, you'll end up parking in a garage most likely and driving around to find one that isn't full, or looking for metered parking. the trip to shady grove should take around 30 minutes with little traffic... That is from the time you leave your home to the time you arrive and park at metro. 35-45 minute trip into NW after that. I would recommend metro, as parking sucks, and it will cost you at least $16, because you'll park for at least 1 hour (After the first hour, most garages are all day parking). Metro will cost you maybe $8 at most.

Take the metro. Cheaper and less hassle.
