The 2010 Infant Mortality Awareness Month theme “A Healthy Baby Begins with Two! Minority Fathers Fight Infant Mortality” is reflective of one of the focal points of the Montgomery County African American Health Program’s (AAHP) Start More Infant’s Living Equally healthy (SMILE) program.

Cognizant of the vital role that fathers play during pregnancy, at child birth, and throughout the life of a child, AAHP’s SMILE program offers a special workshop just for Dads in addition to Childbirth and Breastfeeding classes, and one-on-one home visitation services to fully support the needs of the pregnant/parenting mother.

This month, in conjunction with National Infant Mortality Awareness Month, the one hour workshop for expectant dads, “I’m Going to be a Father, Now What?” will be offered on September 21 along with free Childbirth and Breastfeeding Education classes at the Eastern Montgomery County Regional Services Center 3300 Briggs Chaney Road Silver Spring, MD. For more information call AAHP at 240-777-1833. Group leader Gary Hunter of Washington, DC will engage the group of expectant fathers in a spirited discussion. Topics will include in the dads to be sharing their feelings about becoming a new parent, thoughts about what their role should be and their experiences thus far during the pregnancy. The session also includes viewing and discussing the DVD “Getting Men Involved,” and Gary will provide participants with his “Top Ten List for New Dads.”
