Default moving to columbia, md

Hi,
I just found out the forum today. My wife and I are trying to buy a townhouse in Columbia this summer. I work in College Park and we have a 2 years old child. We have at most $ 310,000 to spend on the house, and we want a safe neighborhood. Right now we are interested in a few properties in Long Reach village (the area near Queen Maria Ct, Sweetwind Place, the elemetary school there is Phelps Luck). We are also looking at some properties in the Carters Cove Subdivision, and in Kings Contriviance village. We are interested in Columbia, due to the reputation of Howard county public school. But we have been seeing some info about the disparities of the schools within Columbia. Any input, on neigborhood to avoid, and comments on the places I mentioned above would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
