I am hoping somebody can help me out with a commute question. I've searched forums and it seems that commute times from Crofton to DC range anywhere between an hour to 2 hours, to more during the summer. My husband will be working in Arlington so that commute will be even longer. Can somebody tell me what the commute is really like there? I really like Crofton area because of the schools and we can actually afford a place there(400K need at least 3 bedrooms), and the schools seem nice. The other issue is that my son will be going to College Park so that commute seems Ok(possibly better than even from Potomac or VA areas) but will I be sentencing my husband to a nightmare commute every evening and morning? If anybody can suggest another area that has great High schools and is close to Arlington and College park, that would be great. I've looked at Vienna and we can afford a smaller place there, but then commute to College Park seems longer than Crofton. Also if we buy a house in Crofton can we easily rent it if we move again? Many thanks.

I'll be interested in other responses, but I hate to tell you Crofton to Arlington will be HELLISH!

BUT...HELLISH is relative and individual. An hour-and a-half each way at least. Sad but true, unless he leaves no later than 5:30 a.m. in the morning. Afternoon's returning home he'd better leave before 3:30p at the latest.

Also WHERE in Crofton are you talking about northern part closer to Gambrills or toward the south right off Rte 450. Minutes count around here.

Both the commutes you mention are bad -- Crofton to Arlington OR Vienna to College Park. Just thinking about them make me cringe.

BUT as you likely know a lot of people in this are do longer commutes than that. (Now, why they think it's worth it, or would sing up for that I don't know, but they do it) They put in their audio books and just do it.

I notice that you specifically haven't mentioned anywhere in PG county. THAT is your best locale for the commutes. The best by far. Please don't tell me you're yet another person ruling out the entire county.

You mention that your son will be going to college park, yet you ask about high schools. Will he be finishing one last year in high school, after your move, or will he be in college by then. If so the high schools wouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for your answer. It confirms what I thought. I need good high school for my daughter, well, middle school and then high school, so kind of trying to plan ahead. If you know of any good options please let me know. I did consider Cheverly but a friend who lives there said she will be sending her kids to a private school and doesn't recommend public.
