Help!!!!My husband is being relocated to the DC area for work. We have visited several times & always come back to the Ashburn/Leesburg VA area. We have 3 children...2 in competitive cheer & 1 in travel ice hockey. Schools are important to us...2 are in elementary, 1 in middle school. Which in your opinion is the better & why? Is there anywhere else in VA or MD you would look at taking in consideration the schools & activities for our kids? We visited Colombia/Ellicott City MD & did not like it. Is there anywhere else outside the DC area in MD you would recommend? Commute isn't an issue since my husband can work from his home office. We will be looking to purchase a newer home in a family friendly neighborhood with good schools for around 600,000+

Thanks for your help!

Severna Park, Arnold and Annapolis areas of Anne Arundel county. Good schools, sports programs and halfway between Baltimore and Washington DC which has the cultural events. Annapolis is MD's state capitol and is known for its quaint historic town and sailing. Also good restaurants and music. It is also 2 hours from the ocean resort areas of MD and DE.

If you like the Ashburn/Leesburg area, I would say go for it! It's a growing area and should have a lot of young families and opportunities for children. As you probably know, the Ashburn rink has youth hockey but I don't know anything more about it. My kids' friends who did travel hockey out of Columbia traveled to PA a lot. You might want to check on how far you will have to travel, as there isn't as much hockey in Va as you get further away from DC. As far as I know, competitive cheer isn't that big in Maryland, at least not compared with areas in the south. My daughter only knows one person who ever did cheer here in Howard County. There might be more interest in that in Va.

But yeah, if you like the area and don't have to commute, then hey.....

Hockey...look in MC.. Montgomery Youth Hockey Association Hockey Website Software By GOALLINE.ca Although in that price range Ashburn would probably be your best bet...oh and competitive cheer is not that big in this area. I've one friend whose daughter travels a bunch though....for what it is it seems a tad expensive.

Going the other direction into Maryland, try looking at Sykesville/Eldersburg. It is a little farther out than Ellicott City but has a completely different feel. The schools are excellent, it's very family friendly, very low crime--an all-around great place to live. (It was even listed on a "Top 50 Places to live in the US" last year by Newsweek I think) Anyway, there are several Cheer groups in the area (although I can't say how they rate compared to what your girls are used to), and there are Ice rinks within a 30 minute drive (3 of them I think).
