Default Long Island NY 2 Maryland, what are your inputs?

Hi, sorry 4 being long winded, but we are excited about this move and Hope to sell our home.

After traveling to and from MD, my wife and I have decided to relocate. We have stayed in multiple hotels in different areas during our visits. We visited Neighborhoods near Baltimore, (2 far north), Fed Ex Field, AAFB, Oxon Hill, Clinton, Accokeek, Brandywine, La Plata and Waldorf. We haven’t even seen east of 301 yet. Searching this forum we see that PGC has its good and bad spots. Sure crime is everywhere. Maybe a political change is needed; not there long enough to form an opinion though. On the other hand Charles Co. appears to be quite rural as well as PGC’s parts of Accokeek & Ft. Wash., and Brandywine. We love rural. Anyone have opinions?

We have encountered a slower pace then NY, and very friendly folks. My wife keeps telling me to “SLOW DOWN; it’s not NYC where everyone in a hurry U know” each time we’re in Maryland!! LOL. We’ve asked church members, store employees’ and folks about Maryland, nothing but praises with remarks to be careful of certain areas. Areas of which we have seen posted on this board, City-Data website.

Being a retired NYC Fire Department*Emergency Medical Service Lieutenant, a service which handled 1000 plus calls a day, we also checked out the 911 system in Baltimore City & County, PG & Charles Counties,. We were very impressed with the FD/EMS/PD/Sheriffs services, but not with the fact that PGC will close three hospitals and two nursing homes. If I'm wrong let my know. We hope they can change things around. My wife commutes 120 miles a day in NY. We had hoped for a decent paying job with her skills on Long Island….. Tolls and fuel commuting expences are $5100 p/yr…Taxes have increased $500 this year, Up $5500 to $6000. That’s up from $2200 ten years ago when we first moved in (Mostly the % is 4 School Taxes).

Cutting to the chase, my wife is interviewing in Lanham & other areas. We are “empty nesters” looking to rent and then build our Log Home. (Don’t worry; we will plant a tree for each log we use). If you have a Log Home for rent/sale let us know. We’ve used Google Earth for directions and distances to and from the following areas to her potential jobs, we might select: PGC: S. Clinton/Piscataway, Accokeek, Ft. Wash., and Brandywine. CC: Waldorf and La Plata. No more then 45 minutes commuting. Hey Maryland lets see what you got……….Thanks..

Well I don't have a log cabin or know of one in the entire area. But I'm all for it because they are a beautiful sight to see. Accokeek would be a great area for a log cabin. Just so quiet and far from the hustle and bustle of DC...Brandywine area would also be another good area to check out...Good luck and please post some photo's when you get it built so we can drool with envy....

Let me say this and you can take it for what it's worth. PG County is a NO-WAY !! Folks are moving out of PG County because of the crime. Dont even consider it.
Charles County is so darn busy with traffic and strip mall's that I wouldn't even consider anywhere near Charles County. Charles Counties crime is on the rise also. Yea,......you could get further south into Charles County, but remember your travels northbound would be ridiculous during rush hour.

I would pick either Anne Arundel or Calvert County. Much much nicer and very very safe compared to the others mentioned. Congrats getting off of the Island. We use to live up their (Suffolk County) and we hated everything about Long Island. Rude people, High Taxes, and the price of houses were pathetic.

You hit it on the head. LI has gotten ridiculous. As for rude, thats an understatement. Thanks for the help on PGC & CC. I guess a little more searching is in order.

Just curious, I see that there are only 3-4 major north-south routes from PGC & CC. Does any one have any alternates that can be used during rush hour thats a little less traveled by commuters. Im reading that rush hour can be a mess.

Thanks.

How about Queen Anne's County in Maryland. My father and his wife built a house in farm area type subdivision. It's perfect for two people -- smallish guest bedrooms, but nice open living room/dining/kitchen , master bedroom with own bath -- beautiful fireplace --screened in porch and sits on edge of woods.

Great quiet location -- near to city of Easton -- possible employment options there.

Well the parts of PGC that you have mentioned have little to no crime. The area that other people mentioned have a lot of illegal immigrants. Please do not be mistaken for the parts of PGC that have crime and the parts of PGC that are very very rural. If you want trees and peace, Accokeek, Ft. Washington, Laurel, Upper Marlboro, and Brandywine are you best bets.

Are you looking to purchase a lot to build on? Accokeek, Fort Washington, Indian Head, and Brandywine are all good options.

There are 2 log cabins in my severna park neighborhood, though none are for sale. You can find some if you look hard - mostly in older neighborhoods, or off on their own not really in a development. Post and beam construction is gaining ground, too, by people who want more charm and class than the ca-chunk ca-chunk stamped out exactly-the-same, no character, brick-faced homes that you see all over the place now.

I grew up in Glen Head in nassau county - for 20 years I've said my favorite view of LI is in the rearview mirror. ;-)
