Hi,

We are moving to MD/DC area in December. My wife has a job in Herndon, VA and mine is in Rockville, MD. We are planning to stay near McLean, VA and I was just wondering about the I 495 traffic. Can anyone advise how the traffic would be on I 495 North in the morning, and on 495 south in the evening (to commute from rockville to Mclean).

Any advise in this regard is also very helpful.

Thanks

Traffic is pretty heavy both ways on the Beltway, but it usually moves okay. North will be slightly better because of all the construction going on in Virginia backs up the southbound side into Maryland. Once you're on 270 North traffic will be lighter since everyone is heading south. In the afternoons 495 South can get really bad. It will take longer than it did in the morning heading north. Living in McLean is good since it shortens the trip.

advice: It is usually better to stay on the beltway in the evening and just be patient, but I have found that 7 Locks rd down to the Clara Barton Pkwy to the American Legion bridge and cross over to the George Washington Parkway to be a good alternative on occasion. The only problem with that may be that I do not know if you will use the GW Parkway or not.

Default Thank you

Hello,

Thanks for the reply. I am a bit confused here. So, you think in the mornings 495 north traffic to rockville is relatively lesser than 495 south, and in the evenings 495 south bound traffic is less than 495 north?

Thanks,

The issue is that I-495 at the American Legion bridge is pretty much your only route between NoVA and Rockville @ the Potomac River. Hence, the traffic is pretty bad in both directions. I had the reverse commute a few years ago (Potomac to McLean). I basically avoided 495 as much as possible by going down Clara Barton and then just hopping onto 495, cross the Legion bridge, and hopping off right at Georgetown Pike and take the local roads into McLean.

If you are working in the northern part of Rockville (i.e Shady Grove/Key Hwy) - an alternate route would be to take Clara Barton to Falls Rd, and cut through Potomac via Glen road to Shady Grove Rd. However, you'll still encounter a lot of traffic on 495 crossing the legion bridge.

@Macroy. I was also thinking about trying to avoid 495 as much as possible. We are also planning to move to Mclean. So how much time do you think it would take this way to come from Rockville to Mclean in the evening?

In the mornings, sort of. In the evenings it's pretty much equal in both directions. I just drove from Gaithersburg to Arlington and back. Left at 4:20 pm and got there at 5:30pm. Stayed for 30 minutes and headed back at 6 pm. Arrived here at 7 pm. Does that help?
