Hello,

We are moving to this area for the first time and am a bit confused whether to rent an apartment in NoVA or in MD. We are planning to buy a used car immediately on coming there, and I have seen some discussion about this in the forum but things were not clear with regards to car taxes, income taxes etc.

Can anyone advise us in this regard.

Thanks a lot!

Much depends on where you will be working. Traffic congestion in the DC area is horrendous to say the least.
Stay out of PG County, MD. High crime, high taxes and terrible schools. Any where in Northern VA. is fine and Montgomery County, MD...maybe.
Charles County,MD. is another option. It's about 30 miles south of DC.
Good luck in your search.

What in the world kind of advice to stay out of pg? Just because you don't like the county doesn't mean you got to run and scare somebody away from a location that might work for them. At any cost to the op are looking to buy? What is your budget and what kind things are important to you (commute, proximity to metro bars shops). Also forgot whether you have a family or not. Look forward to helping you.

I love how MoCo is a "maybe."

The entire portion of PG County isn't like that. There are some nice parts. As for Charles County, unless you like long commutes or you work in southern MD somewhere I would avoid it. Just about one way in and one way out, the traffic is a headache. There are also some sketchy parts of Waldorf so Charles County isn't the utopia this individual is trying to make out to be. Northern VA isn't as clear cut either because traffic can be bad there as well and there a certain places like Alexandria that are expensive, congested, considerable amount of crime, and have mediocre schools.

I agree with jayman, we need a bit more info. Where will you be working? What is the maximum commuting time you are willing to accept? Do you have a family? School age kids? Do you prefer suburban or urban or rural? What is your budget as well.
