Hi All,
I'm currenlty living in Berkeley Ca but i'm thinking of moving back east to be closer to family and raise my daughter. I know I won't be able to find a city exactly like Berkeley, however I"m curious to know if there are any cities in MD that has diversity and has family friendly neighborhoods.

Before you buy a house, I suggest lining up a job first, and then look for housing near your job. Just what community exactly are your family members in ? The planned community of COLUMBIA, MD is one that is rated near the top of "Money" magazine's annual list of best communities, and it is multi-racial. But it would depend on where you work. Did you have in mind the Baltimore area, or the Washington area, or another area of the State ? As far as liberal politics, Takoma Park is very liberal.

Columbia is like completely the opposite of Berkley.

Define "diversity..." Artistic? Racial/ethnic? Lifestyle? You can find all of it.

You might want to explain what you mean by diversity. My first thought was Asian, because of Berkeley, and there's plenty of that here - espeically in NoVa, Montgomery, and the Ellicott City area of Howard. In my mind, all the DC suburbs are pretty diverse.

Except for southern Prince Geo County inside the beltway, which is almost completely African-American with a few Hispanics.

You might want to check out Takoma Park. It's often referred to as the east coast version of Berkeley and has been nicknamed "The People's Republic of Takoma Park". It also has the diversity you're looking for.

If you like Berkley you will be unhappy moving from Berkley, CA to ANYWHERE in MD.

If you don't enjoy Berkley, then you may find ANYWHERE in MD to be great.

^^ I agree with this. Most people tend to be either east coast or west coast types. You can't be both.

I beg to differ. Spent the first 36 years in the Seattle area, and for the last 11 years have been here. I like both, even though they are decidedly not the same.
