Before you buy a house, I suggest lining up a job first, and then look for housing near your job. Just what community exactly are your family members in ? The planned community of COLUMBIA, MD is one that is rated near the top of "Money" magazine's annual list of best communities, and it is multi-racial. But it would depend on where you work. Did you have in mind the Baltimore area, or the Washington area, or another area of the State ? As far as liberal politics, Takoma Park is very liberal.

You might want to explain what you mean by diversity. My first thought was Asian, because of Berkeley, and there's plenty of that here - espeically in NoVa, Montgomery, and the Ellicott City area of Howard. In my mind, all the DC suburbs are pretty diverse.

You might want to check out Takoma Park. It's often referred to as the east coast version of Berkeley and has been nicknamed "The People's Republic of Takoma Park". It also has the diversity you're looking for.
