I will be moving from central NJ to APG area in late 2010 - early 2011 due to the BRAC. I am looking for a commutable area (25-40 minutes) from APG that has a decent size Jewish population (non-orthodox). I am willing to move to MD, DE or PA and am looking in the $300 - 350K range. I know Baltimore has some communities but they seem like to long of a commute. Any other suggestions?

APG is Aberdeen Proving Ground in Aberdeen MD, northeast of Baltimore along 95, about halfway between Baltimore and the MD/DE border.

I too live in Central NJ. We might be forced to move if my husband still wants a job. He is with a private contractor and would not be eligible for any relo package. I would like to stay here as long as possible. My two children are both in HS. We currently belong to a large Conservative Synagouge, and live in Jewish community. We have it all here. I have not heard many nice things about Harve de Grace, except that is the only place around. It seems that most people are moving to Bel Air. Maybe if enough of us get together we can start up a minyon of our own. We are planning to go the fair on Sat. I am planning to call the Temple there and see what they say. Keep us posted.

Well I've lived in Harford County (the county that has Bel Air, APG, and Havre De Grace in it) for nearly 30 years (I grew up here). Bel Air is mostly white, I'd say majority Roman Catholic or Protestant.

Havre de Grace certainly has its nice parts, such as Bulle Rock and water front areas on the Chesapeake Bay. It's much closer to APG than Bel Air is. It's close to the Perryville Outlets for shopping. Right along the I95 corridor if you need to go back to NJ, or want to go anywhere else in the mid-atlantic. Yes, it used to be dumpy especially before the 80s but alot of it's turned around. If you haven't been here and "hearing" all of this, it's definitely worth checking out. In the grand scheme of things, Havre de Grace really isn't that far from Bel Air either, about 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic. Just head up Route 22 to 155.

Otherwise, the largest Jewish community is in the Pikesville area which is North West of Baltimore.

I work on APG and have lived in the area for 20+ years.

I've have lived in Harford, Baltimore, and Cecil counties. Bel Air is mostly white and a decent area to live in. Anything south of the Rt 40 area you want to stay away from in Harford County. HDG isn't bad depending on where you live. The nicest place would be Bulle Rock, but also the most expensive.

I live in Cecil now. Cecil is more of a white, Catholic/Protestant area, but a little on the "country/redneck" side. I believe there is a small Jewish Synagouge on Rt 40 somewhere. There's a lower crime rate, and a lot of new homes being built up there. Remember the further north you go on I-95, the cost of living goes down too.

If you are looking at a $300-350K home, I would check out North East, in Cecil County. It's a nice area, and you get a lot of house for the money.

I just moved to Delaware with the Brac. We live right on the border near Elkton. I have not seen many Synagouges at all. It is not like back in NJ (Ocean Twp area) I am not Jewish though and did not do much research on it. Best of luck. I am with Brac though and have dealt with the move, so let me know if I can help out in anyway.

Pikesville in Baltimore County is known as an almost exclusively Jewish area. I believe you will like it there.
