We are a young couple looking to possibly relocate near the Ft. Meade area. We don't have children yet, but that's something we want to keep in mind as per safety/educational reasons. Any suggestions on the safest towns in the Ft. Meade area that won't require a major commute? Looking for less than 30 mins. Been doing some research but would love the opinion from those who live in the area! We would be moving from a very safe town in Southern New Jersey.
Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated! Thank you

Elkridge is a nice area north of Ft. Meade in Howard County. They are building another school in the area so if you look at the school information don't be surprised about the overcrowding in the eastern part of the county. Your definition of affordable is difficult - places in Columbia and Ellicott City may be affordable, but more expensive than an area like Laurel or Fulton (east of Ft. Meade). But then it depends if you're looking to rent/buy home/townhome/condo. I am biased toward Howard County (b/c I live here), so I can't comment about the areas in Anne Arundel county.

I live in Sykesville (southern Carroll Co.) which is a popular Ft. Meade commuter area. A little longer than what you had stated--probably more like 40-45 minutes, but the schools are outstanding and it is very family friendly. It is also more affordable than most areas of Howard County and not quite as congested.

I live in Mt Airy which is about 50-65 minutes from Ft Meade. It's a neat little small town on the way to Frederick. Good schools and the housing we found was affordable for our price range.

When I first moved here I lived in Laurel. The family I lived with absolutely hated it, for the most part it seemed all right to me. Although I lived in a really nice area, my car was broken into and some items were stolen.

Hopefully this won't happen again. I looked at so many places over the last three months that I really should have kept some notes. It's really hard to tell how a place really is until you spend some time there.

Good luck in your search.
