Mt. Rainier, normally pronounced the same as the mountain-volcano in Washington State (Mt. Ra neer) but not in Maryland, (Mt. Rain yer)

La Plata in southern MD is "LA PLAY TA" -- although outsiders often think it's "LA PLAA TA" like the famous river in Argentina.

And it's CAYTONSVILLE not CAATONSVILLE.

I hate when Silver Spring becomes plural, i.e., Silver Springs. I also actually heard one non-native pronounce Bethesda as Beth-say-da. I'll assume they just reversed the s and e.

I've only lived here for about a year, and I was guilty of saying La "Plah-ta" and "Tay-knee-town" (actually just recently learned that one was wrong) for awhile. Think I have the rest down though.

But is this one correct? Don't think I've heard Dundalk pronounced like that before.

Not MD, but what is the correct pronunciation of McLean VA? It's like "McClain" right?

Seeing as you are a transplant and haven't lived here for all of your life - nearly 3 decades like I have - why do you have to single out my post? This is perhaps the MOST worthy place's name of being on this list. Everyone from Dundalk would laugh at you for saying it as it's spelled. If you've actually been around natives of Dundalk, Essex, and other working class parts of Greater Baltimore you would understand that anyone with a native Baltimorese accent pronounces Dundalk as DONEDOCK- noone will pronounce it "correctly" as DUNDAWLK unless perhaps that individual is a native of another state, Towson, or a different part of Maryland. No need to get this verified by someone else- I have plenty of authority to speak on this one, believe me lol

I was just asking a question. I singled out that one because that was probably the only one I hadn't heard before. I've been to Dundalk multiple times and don't think I've ever heard it pronounced like "Donedock". So are you saying the "correct" pronunciation really is how it's spelled but it's just that people from there don't pronounce it like that?

Edit: To clarify, I think I usually pronounce it as "DUN-DAWK" moreso than "DUN-DAWLK." I just googled it and found a facebook page for people from Dundalk and they say they pronounce it as "DUN-DAWK"
