Then why not accept it as a Southern state?...

Because of Maryland's geographic location in the US.

Because it has all the hallmarks of a northeastern state:
1) Local school systems based around towns and not Counties.
2) School Boards which have the power of taxation.
3) Weak County governments.
4) Strong and independent municipal and Township governments.
5) Bottom up school management with little interference from the State.
6) A non-plantation style of state government where the local governments don't have to have permission from the Legislature to enact laws or bond projects.

Oh wait, none of the above apply to MD.

Yes, but even when none of those things apply to Maryland, then Maryland can still be a northeastern state. How would a state without these traits cannot be a northeastern state?

West Virginia and Virginia at the latitudes of most of Maryland aren't Southern. West Virginia extends further north than Pennsylvania's southernmost border so is Pennsylvania Southern?

You guys would probably be surprised at how many people in Anne Arundel County believe the South starts at US Rt 50. Southern AA Co, Culvert Co, St. Mary's, Charles. They're all in the South and deeply rooted there.

I wouldn't be at all surprised. But I've also seen the headstones with CSA on them and the Confederate memorials all over the area. As well as private, in home, memorials to The Cause.
