me and my husband bought a house this year and asked a contrator to repair for us, we paid the downpayment for 35,000 already, but the workers just did a two day job for us. the contrator said he paid the workes but the workers didn't work, while the workers said the contractor didn't pay them. now whenever my husband call the contractor , he never answer the phone or just find excuse to say he will show up next day( of course not). later on , we found out only the contractor's partner is licenced, but not him. we signed a contract before the project, but since he is not licened, can we still do something. what can we do now ? how can we get back our money? or can we do something to compensate for ourselves? it is 35,000. that amount of money is very important to us

Is the Contractor working under his Partner License?
If he is working under his partner license then you can report the partner to the State and have the partner put pressure on the contractor to repay you your money. No one wants to face the State. You need to call the Department you handles contractor licensing in Maryland.

If he's unlicensed you can't report him to he MD Home Improvement Commission. Well, you can but they only cover licensed contractors. If he was working under his partner's license you can report him. Other than that you may have to file a claim in District Court.
