Anyone have an idea of what's the best bank to have upon moving to Frederick Maryland? I'm trying to get as much done as I can before I head out to Frederick in less than 2 weeks. Any ideas on a good bank to choose?? Any help would be appreciated!!

Thanks!

BB&T seems to have lesser fees and more branches than most banks.

I have only personally dealt with two banks (for checking accounts) in my so far short lifetime. I first used Sandy Spring until I moved to western MD. I now use Susquehanna.

In my opinion Sandy Spring offers better service. All transactions are cleared the moment you make them - there is no waiting or pending transactions - so it is a little easier to see how much money I actually have in the bank. Also, I don't remember having issues with transactions after 3pm. With Susquehanna, any transaction after 3pm will not occur until the next day.

What are you looking for in a financial institution? less fees, plenty of branches, ATM's etc?

If you want the least fees and don't care about branches - ING is great as they pretty much have no fees. But they also have no branches.

A good mixture in the local area would be a credit union. They typically have branches in the area, and are often part of larger ATM networks. And usually still value personal service. The only caveat to that would be the potential lack of support outside of the area (there are CU's that do Co-ops, but not all do).

Thanks everyone. What I'm really looking for is a bank that has many branches within the Frederick area. I will definitely look into the banks mentioned and a credit union..as currently I'm a part of a credit union.

I agree that it makes sense to use a bank that's convenient for you. I've used M&T since my freshman year in college (it was 1st National Bank of MD then, then Allfirst, before being bought by M&T) because there were branches in Westminster where I went to school, and Hagerstown where I lived with my parents. After graduation I moved to Frederick, and kept my account with M&T because there were lots of branches & ATMs. I have a free checking account and I've never had any kind of fees, plus the times I have had to go inside a bank the tellers have been friendly. No complaints about M&T, and the many branches & ATMs give me a lot of options wherever I am in town.

Good luck!

And I would stay away from Capitol One, just based on my experience with their credit card business.
