OK- reading thru the posts, an OP described a place that sounds PERFECT to me.

Unfortunately, this style of apartment is being replaced by "TOWERS". Ugh. I know about the density thing, you can fit more people into a Tower. But UGH and ICK.

Looking to rent an apartment in an older apartment building, say from the 1920s-30's-40's. A small complex, around 10-20 units. Good plaster construction so the walls are thick and I rarely hear my neighbors. OK if it lacks in typical "modern" amenities as long as the there is a certain "charm".

Ideally the mailboxes are downstairs & the dumpster is just outside. The grocery store is 3 blocks away. The library is a block away. The movie theater is 4 blocks away...you get the idea.

I want to avoid the large, cookie cutter apartment-type if possible, although I know that's not always easy.
Looking for an older, smaller, but well maintained apartment (with fewer amenities).

Where should I be looking?

Well I know what you are talking about. I love living in small charming building, but I also hate hearing my neighbors or running out of hot water. Here in Mt Venon there is many old brownstones converted to apartments, many real slums, where the wind comes through the 'walls' heat is an unmaintained furnace from 1940s, and so is the stove, and mice are everywhere. Yikes! Anyway i am real happy with where I live now, the building is clean, washer and dryer on premises, parking out back, neighbors are friendly, but I don't hear them much So plug for these guys in midtown 715 Park Ave By the way I just saw they are renting, go fast! LOL! 1BR/1BA Apartment - Park Ave
