My husband, 2 small children and I are moving from Las Vegas, NV to MD in a couple of weeks. His new job will be in Hanover (close to BWI). Any advice on where to live??? We're on a strict budget until we get settled ($1300/month) and are most concerned about a safe neighborhood for our family. Not worried about school districts yet, as our kids are still young (can relocate after we are familiar with the area). Just want to be safe and our kids to be happy. My hubby doesn't mind a reasonable commute. Perfect world = single family home (not likely)...Small townhome would be great...apartment is certainly not out of the question considering the budget.
A little overwhelmed, but staying positive.

Linthicum and Ferndale are very close and will likely be the least expensive option.
Both are a strong "B" choice.

If you can afford an "A" choice then head North on Rt100 or Rt 32 toward Ellicott City...
and to a lesser degree Columbia proper. And plan to stay there.

Some more strong "B" choices are on the other side of Columbia going toward Frederick.
Longer commute. Worth it.

Laurel is another cheap and good alternative.

Elkridge is a good area and close to Hanover - the commute would be nothing. Lots of townhomes going up and a good place to start looking.
