Assateague State Park - where to stay & what to do?
I will be traveling alone w/ my two kids & we are not good tent campers, so as much as camping on the beach sounds dreamy, this is not what I am looking for.

To my knowlege Assateague is just camping, either tents or trailers. I don't believe they have cabins. The island is basically the beach, the natural barrier island eco-system, the ponies, and the mosquitos. It is kept that way on purpose. You can drive in each day and pay a small fee to park and use the beach.

Yup, stay in Ocean City and take a day trip to Assateague.

Or, try Chincoteague, Va. instead - just a little farther south with it's own access to Assateague Island Wildlife Refuge. Lots of options as far as places to stay and things to do, and you still have the beach and the wild ponies.

Frontiertown has bare bones cabins and they have (or used to, definitely double-check) shuttle busses to Assateague. They are very close to Assateague. Assateague has the bath house so the bus is not so bad since you don't have to ride in wet suits. Frontiertown has the Western town, mini golf, and the water park (pretty small, water slides (the biggest one is the one you see from the highway) and a lazy river).
