I would avoid Edgewood, Bel Air and Abingdon are very nice. Emmorton Elementary is probably the best.

Abingdon/Bel Air
I agree, Bel Air and Abingdon are very nice areas. Also Forest Hill and Falston are nice as well. Stay clear of Edgewood/Belcamp/Aberdeen.

Do you have kids? Edgewood schools have the worst repuation around here. I know some folks who bought in edgewood over the summer primarily b/c of the diversity of the community. Now its 8 months later and they are about to sell primarily b/c the schools are so bad. It sounds like bad manegement allowing discipline problems to continue. Also, most of Abington goes to Edgewood middle and high.
From reading the local paper, it does seem there is more crime in Edgewood and Aberdeen than the rest of the county. I don't think its too much rascism, as Harford county really isn't that diverse :\ Or maybe it is, and Edgewood is the only place with anyone other than white. Of course, no one comes out and says that is what their bias on Edgewood is based on. I've been trying to figure it out myself.
We are currently looking in Abington, Joppa, and a little Havre de Grace. We don't have kids, so school are primarily a resale value thing for us. But I have been talking to coworkers, people I meet on the street, bascially everyone to find out about the area, and I keep hearing to stay out of Edgewood if you can.

Edgewood is the roughest area of Harford County, indeed, I know the area decently well from living there years back and having family and friends there; Aberdeen then downtown Havre De Grace are close behind; well HdG used to have a really rough neighborhood off of Revolution Street but it was torn down so it's pretty quiet around there now. In Edgewood the "problems" are concealed to several neighborhoods; having family in Harford Square and Harford Mobile and friends in Windsor Valley i can tell you where it all is. The "problem" areas of Edgewood seem to be as follows: Brookside Drive Area,Village at Lakeview,Meadowood,Harford Square. There are other smaller pockets but that is the heart of it. As long as you don't live in those pockets of town it's pretty quiet in the area. Aberdeen is nice northwest of route 40, the apartments on the east side is where most crime is, and Havre De Grace is nice as long as you're not near the 2 small public housing districts (one is Somerset Manor, the other Bradford Green and the houses near it) or the dead center of downtown. Whoever said Belcamp has crime clearly has never been there...Belcamp is one of the richest parts of Harford County, with only 2% below poverty and extremely suburban and white collar whites. Bel Air is inbetween, but Bel Air south and the Abingdon area are becoming more and more like Edgewood, believe me when I say that. Joppatowne is mainly white-collar middle-class suburban, with a couple small apartment complexes that are decent. South Bel Air/Abingdon and Northwest Havre De Grace are probably the most family-oriented areas.

I am a student of Edgewood High School, graduating class of 09, and I need to say that our schools wrap isn't as bad as its made out to be, it's only because the area isn't exactly rich, now true Edgewater village isn't some place you want to be at night, or even day for that matter, but it's mostly all blown way out of proportion for the rest of the town, and even that area is coming under reform, now on the drug subject, we are known as good weed, but the richer schools like Bel air, C milton and aberdeen, have worse drugs, because the students have money, and carless parents, it's those towns you need to worry about.

Edgewood - Great Place to Live !!
I would have to disagree. I have lived in Harford County most of my life and have recently moved to Edgewood. It will be 3 years in January. There are rough areas but there are rough areas, gangs, drugs and violence in all of Harford County, including Bel Air. When I moved to Edgewood I moved out of necessity, not because I wanted to live here however after living here I have come to love this community. They have an awesome Parks & Rec program and new building, Flying Point Park has boat launch/ playground/ picnic areas, Marc train station, Farmers Market in the summer, after school programs at the Library just to name a few. The people who say that Edgewood is not a great place to live must now know much about Edgewood or the people who live here. We are working very hard to make this a better place to live each year and are proud of our community spirit. Thanks for letting me share..
