we are looking for a good moving company that does long distance moves (MD to NH) - and that would move us between christmas and new years! actually, it's not as important that our things be delivered in that week as it is to be out of the house that week (since I understand that it can take longer than drive time to receive one's things). I've never used a moving company before!

no one has moved away from MD in here??

Anyone know anything about 'In and Out Movers'? even from a local move?

We are moving TO Maryland from Minnesota. We used United Vanlines. They gave us a slightly higher quote , but made us feel more comfortable about the move.

We used Orly Movers out of Baltimore for a local move from Ellicott City to Eldersburg. I don't know if they also do longer moves, but we were very happy with them.
I've also heard very good things about Glamour Movers based in Westminster, MD.

We recently used Atlas for a military move- I'm not sure what they do for non-military, but they used local contractors to pack, move, ship etc. and that was a horrible experience (on the VA end, we just moved back to MD). So check with the van line to see if they use locals and try to get some idea of who they might use if you can.

How could anyone on here tell you if a mover is available between Christmas and New Years. You want them to make the phone call for you? This is something you will have to do for yourself.

Thank you, yes of course I know I have to make phone calls. and I have been! Perhaps someone else has moved -or tried to move- that same week and found out that everyone shuts down then? Or perhaps someone else has moved in Dec and was told a company shuts down or charges extra then? You never know, someone might even work for, or have a relative that works for a moving company! I don't know. That's why I'm asking.

So far, from the few companies I've gotten hold of, it doesn't seem to be a problem (DH was sure it would be, I was sure it wouldn't). But still, it's good to know who has been a good mover and who has been a bad one. Effulgent's comments are as useful as Gabrielle's & Angiefaith's - notice I also asked for a 'good, long distance moving company'! At least it's a place to start.

I moved out of Maryland, long distance, and got best quote from Hampden Movers. They also own Von Paris, but don't tell you that. They did a great job on mine, not one thing damaged.
I got maybe 5 quotes, they were lowest by several hundred.

thanks, Rusty. I'll check into them. I tried Von Paris, but they seemed confused. they couldn't even tell me if it was company policy to take jobs between Christmas & New Years or if they shut down. You'd think people would know that....
