Im interviewing for a job with IBM on 14th Street NW in DC. How long/bad would the commute be from Ellicott City? I would assume the metro would be the best way to go, but day to day does anyone make the commute? How is it?

Thanks.

the bus is fast!!!! an adrenaline rush of a commute if u ask me. Sometimes the bus moves faster than cars on the highway!!!!

When I worked in DC and lived in Ellicott City I would take the MARC train from Dorsey station to Union Station and just read on the train. Then I took the Metro to my work from Union Station. I've never taken the bus, but heard good things about it.

It's a brutal commute. I didn't make this commute during the work week, but I often went into DC from EC on the weekends, and it took 1 1/2 hours one way, and that's if streets were not blocked off. It didn't matter whether I drove all the way, or parked my car at Greenbelt and Metro'd in. My colleague who did the reverse commute for work coming from Dupont Circle in DC to just north of EC says it took her close to 2 hours one way: Metro, Amtrak, bus, walk a few blocks to work.

How long did it take you to drive from EC to the Greenbelt metro station?

Summing up the last 3 posters...sounds like driving is just bad all the way around. Bus was faster than driving. The MARC was an okay option as well.

Driving can be rough. I drive from Columbia to Bethesda and it takes anywhere from 30min-2 hours depending on traffic and weather. If you schedule is amenable, I would do the MARC/Metro or commuter bus. Also check to see if your new job has any kind of program to help cover your public transit costs.

From Columbia it takes 20-30 minutes to get to greenbelt on most days but it can vary if there is an accident and the time of day that you are leaving. It takes me 1 - 1 1/2 hours to get to gallery place when I drive to greenbelt and then take the metro. If you have flexibility the MARC is a better option or the bus.
