westsideboy... if that was directed to me... yes I do have a problem with that if they ARE illegals.. again... not my idea of our tax dollars at work.. let them get the card... make the first class a English class... btw.. I dont recall seeing any signs in German, French, Italian, or Chinese in the last few years.. if social workers and public service people want to learn Spanish to make them more effective in there jobs , thats great.. my problem is being told that we have to learn a new language as a result of there being 20 million plus people here that dont know the language.. One language... being forced to learn a second language only serves to keep people separate..individualism and respecting our diverse heritage is fine as long as we are all American first.Immigrants need to assimilate into American society.. isnt that why they came here?? seeking to better their lives??.. Historically immigrants have added to our culture and made us who we are..The mutts of the world... if we dont learn anything about what is currently hap penning in England and Western Europe , we will have to deal with a much bigger problem here... if thats the case we might as well go ahead and write off the southwest section of this country and give it back to Mexico... Hell maybe thats the plan anyhow.. LOL... . btw .. its not just Spainish our school system are having to deal with...

I just hate seeing these people who come in here and rape the country I love and have fought for. Many do not care about America. Most are here purely for economic reasons, and I can't blame them, but this is our country, if you want to immigrate, do it legally and in smaller numbers. And when you get over here don't blame us for not supporting you, go back to Mexico, El Salvador, etc. and demand that your country (which to this day they are still run by white Spanish "conquistadors" if you will) and fight for social change. Take what happened at that high school in Calexico for example:

I used to be bouncer at 2K-9. So was my brother. I've won a few, I've lost a few, but I know how to throw.
I'm half latin. The other half is hot-blooded German. I have the latin features with Hans und Franz muscles. (Used to anyway... been lazy :-P)
Ignorant use of the word Mexican? Yeah, probably. In the future I will be certain to identify them by exact country of origin to avoid hurt feeelings. It was pretty rude of me... wiping Mace out of my eyes and not asking Jose (yes, that was his name) where his mama is from. I will be more sensitive in the future.
I don't hate latin people at all. I love my momma. I hate reggaeton, but I love salsa. I can't dance for sh*t to it, but I try anyway. In retrospect, I'm not racist, but I hate ignorance. Unfortunately, that is what a lot of ILLEGAL immigrants bring with them, and, ultimately breed into their children. Again, NOT ALL, but quite a few.
I got a 20903 zip code buddy... how about you?

boog,
These arguements are the same ones that have been used for about 150 years in the this country about every large scale immigrant group. I remember reading about the "native irish" flooding the country. Newspapers and propagda said their were filthy, they only socialized among themselves, wouldn't learn english, were a threat to the fabric of this country, etc. etc. The same things were said about the Italians, Greeks, Russian Jews, Poles, etc. And, to my knowlege, these groups all assimilated within a few generations.
The recent "crisis" about Hispanic immigrations is just rehashing these same fears. Your point about becoming "American" and learning English is a valid one, but it takes generations, and is normally done through the education system. My wife's great grandmother immigrated as a young woman and never learned a lick of English, her daughter learned it the hard way, as a 5 year old in school and ended up being bi-lingual. Her son (my wife's father) speaks in a Maryland dialect and only knows enough greek to know when he is being cursed at.
Finally, many "natives" do not consider themselves "Americans" first. I am a Allegany Countian first, a Marylander second, an Appalachian (hillbilly) third, and an American only a distant fourth. No offense to to anyone, but things that make us all "American" are less important to me than what makes me a part of my local and regional communities.

At long last, this thread has finally come to its logical conclusion of questioning who on the Maryland forum is American enough.

JaBradshaw, no lie. American is a distant 4th.
I have a whole theory about how America isn't a nation in the same way that Britain, or France, or Greece is. America is more a political ideal. Our shared "American" heritage is little more than a well written document that allows us the right to stay away from each other and the rule of despotic goverment. I like the ideals of the American state, but as a "nationality" I find it very hollow.

You want an illegal free place to live? Move to Hazelton Pa. The mayor there fines businesses who hire illegals and keeps close tabs on who is legal and who isn't. He doesn't want his tax money going to educate illegals who aren't paying their share and draining the welfare rolls with their medical bills. Hurray for him! I can't remember his name but I think he should run for president.

You make some good points, but I identify first and foremost as an American and am proud of it. Also if you don't identify strongly with America why do you identify with Allegany.

In case you forgot, here are your exact words:
"My bro and I get jumped by 8 mexicans (Salvadoreans to be exact)"
How do you know that they were "Salvadoreans" instead of Mexicans? Did they tell you where their mother was from while you were beating them with your Hans und Franz muscles? And, if you knew exactly where they were from, why would you first refer to them as Mexicans?
I'm not here to defend illegal immigrants, but being 1/4th Mexican I do get offended when people make generalizations. I'm just as American as any
White, Black, or Asian person, so why do people assume that I'm an illegal simply because I'm Hispanic?
