Apartments in Odenton, Laurel
I am moving from Nebraska in a few weeks and am looking to rent a 1 bedroom apartment. With the short notice I am hoping to gather as much information as I can before coming out to find a place to live... Laurel and Odenton have both been suggested to me and specifically Piney Orchards in Odenton. What can anyone tell me about these areas? Are they safe (I'm a single, 20-something female)? Is it at least an alright area for singles, i.e. things to do? And what apartments would you suggest looking at? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I want to bump this up because I pretty much have the same queries (also a single 20-something female who is looking to rent 1- maybe 2-bedroom place). I won't be moving THAT soon, but I am planning on going to school in Laurel in Sept. I prefer quiet, safe neighborhoods with a good community. Not a party girl, but a nice distance from a movie theater wouldn't be so bad.

I live in Laurel and would recommend it. There are plenty of small apartment complexes that offer good deals on one and two bedroom apartments. I would stay away from the large ones though. Craigslist has listings for Laurel. Some of the buildings are only 4 units and privately owned. The building next to us is a 4-unit, 2 bedroom, central air, really large kitchen, washer and dryer, wall to wall going for $650. I lived in it 7 years ago and the rent was only $550. Its in the historic district so its a 100+ plus year old home that was converted. The neighborhood otherwise is single family homes. Deals like this can be found if you really look.

Hmm, thanks! Actually, from what I've been reading, Historic Laurel sounds like exactly the kind of place I'd like (Old Town feel, ability to walk around, walking distance from stores, post office and things to do).
Where, besides Craigslist (which doesn't really have much up now), can I find advertisement on places in historic Laurel? I saw something called "Friendship square apartments" (on Main street), would that be one of the small or larger apartment complexes?
I'm not planning on moving soon (maybe in 6-8 months) so I have time. But, I'd like to keep on the lookout for good deals so I don't get stuck looking for something at the last minute.

The PennySaver always has listings at Pennysaver Wired: Search Pennysaver Classifieds. The Laurel Leader is also good at Laurel Leader. The Gazette is another one Gazette.Net. The Gazette has different versions for different counties. Historic Laurel is in PG County the rest is in Howard and Anne Arundel and a tiny little bit in Montgomery.
