I think that more casually people nowadays distinguish between Northern (New England), Southern (the Deep South), and Mid-Atlantic, which would include Virginia, MD, DC and Delaware (any maybe some other stuff, you all can argue about that if you want).
So, maybe the reason that no one can agree on whether MD is Northern or Southern is that it's neither. It's in the middle.

Actually most posters here have said its northern SOME said in the middle or a mix of both. Its usually the conservative older residents that have been taught the MASON DIXON way that feel its southern.Mid atlantic has several meanings,i have seen north carolina and states far as NY grouped as mid atlantic.

Have you ever been up north it seems like that they're more racist up there(Boston and Jersey). Plus Boston is more segregated than B'more and DC. I give you Carolina roots thing but I haven't really met anyone from Kentucky. The Eastern Shore is mostly southern but Baltimore is more northern going by it's skyline and density alone. The accents in Baltimore are very similar to Philly's. New Jersey has swamps too does that make them southern? Also there was also slavery going on up north too that's a dirty little secret they like to hide up there. Oh and the Princess Anne is 2 1/2 hours away from NC logic It only takes 30-45 minutes to get from Elkton to Philly so what's your point? A lot of us was raised southern here, live southern here, talk southern here and eat southern here???? Do you even know what SOUTHERN is? You can't even get sweet tea or country ham in MD.
Going off of personal experience typical people from the places south of MD consider it northern and laugh at people like you who try their hardest to act so "southern". Typical people north of MD thinks MD is southern except for some who actually venture down past MD and into areas like VA and NC and then they say it's in between. Then there's people up in Boston that think New York is "southern" so they think most of the east coast is "southern" and then there's people in Alabama that think North Carolina is "northern"

HAHA SO TRUE'
Boston is extremely racist,i know from personal experience.Even in NYC the cops that are white can be racist as hell, and i have cornered many who mistaken me for some ghetto hoodrat that was a teenager and knew no better, yet im a 24 year old adult with parents in law enforcement and very aware of racial profiling that others in low income areas are not aware of.They thought i was stupid but either backed off when i told them about there actions,or i simply called another officer or went and filed a racial profiling complaint that was taken very serious in 3 cases i have encountered in the last 5 years of being here.
And yes there are NYers that think of MD as southern and usually they consider South Jersey,Philly southern as well.As you said those NYers who actually travel to the south will say its inbetween, and from my personal experience those who have family in the south and travel there alot through the summers say MD is north and they themselves have made fun of MD residents thinking they are from the south, putting on these exaggerated drawls like those in the young generation do(southern hip hop movement is big,and with big movements comes usual attempts to assimilate within).I laugh so much when i am in southeast and i talk to some of its young residents about NY and they trash NY,yet love to compliment ATLANTA,lying out there teeth talking about ATLANTA felt like home when the city is in no way, shape or form similar to DC.Whats funnier is when some of my cousins were in Hardees in SC trying to argue to me that they are southerners from MD,when this lady blurted out a laugh and said YALL IS NOT SOUTHERN,YALL IS CITY LIKE HELL!,JUST LISTEN TO HOW YOU TALK,YALL AINT NEW YORKERS,BUT YOU STILL CITY,YOU AINT SOUTHERN" my cousins were mad as other people laughed and cosigned that lady.I told my cousins whats a shame is even with the fake southern LIL WAYNE jocking accents you try to carry. The true southerners can see through it and hear your northern accents and pronounciations well.LOL
I laugh and find it kind of sad how some MD/DC residents wish to be from the south,i say its excusable if you are originally from the south like many of its residents in spotty areas such as PG county or Southeast,DC yet most of them still lose there strong southern accents and start picking up very northern dressing styles and whats funnier is the ever increase slang word ""SON""i hear in MD/DC which is extremely a tri-state slur.
Sometimes i wonder if DC/MD african american residents have regional identity crisis, yet realized the catergories are as you mentioned, except the many in areas of PG COUNTY that originally come from the south.
1.wannabe southerners
2.wannabe new yorkers( they do exist as well.yet not like it does in the young native md/dc young residents that only want to be southern because the south has taken large steps in the hip hop world)
3.or people who know its north or mid atlantic which are a large majority.BTW Baltimore has a large porportion of residents who have twangs due to being originally from the south, native baltimorians are northern or have very neutral accents some north of them would say is southern, sort of southern,a mix,or northern just not northern like the tri state accent and southerners definetly group them as northern.
I hear many DC/MD residents seperating themselves from the south all the time, even the ones who pretend there from the south slip-up and dont realize i have observed them position themselves as different from southerners,or the area,or the areas living or mentality.I have met people in MAINE that think NY,JERSEY is southern lol.

this thread has seemed to take an African American slant to it in the last few pgs.
anyway I grew up in Severna Park/Millersville close to Pasadena and my parents are Indian Immigrants. never got the southern vibe. of course this is part of baltimore metro. I can see how it would be different in the Black community because of their roots. perhaps many of the SP transplants were from the north? I don't think southern culture is as popular with other communities as it is with the Black community. I'm going to generalize but I really doubt it's too popular amongst the white community and of cours ethe country in general.
this is just about Baltimore. posted an excerpt. probably posted the link upthread.
STYLE magazine, Smart Living in Baltimore
Border Town
A charming Southern burg or a bustling Northern metropolis? Baltimoreans aren't sure— and never have been.
by Michael Anft
The city’s geographical status frequently lies in the eye of the beholder— and where they’ve come from. Immigrants from Europe and Central and South America have tended to see themselves as Northern, for example, as have Jews and expatriates of the old Confederacy. “Its manners, its food— the way it carries itself— Baltimore is definitely a Northern city,” says Elizabeth Large, restaurant critic at The Sun and a native of Knoxville, Tenn.

lol@you talkin' tough behind a computer?? That's real gangsta fam!
You couldn't even tell me what southern is so I don't know where ya gettin all this southern pride from. It just seems like you're going off of the fact that Maryland is below the mason-dixon line which has been outdated since the end of slavery. MD is the mid-atlantic we're in between the "city-folk" are northern and the "country-folk" are southern it's pretty much been like this since MD's existence. Notice how the majority of Maryland's soldiers fought for the Union(the north) and not for the confederacy(the south). in the civil war. There are many places in the south that still hate us to this day for turning on em. In all honesty Maryland is about 85% Northern and 15% Southern

Well, to me and most MARYLAND IS NORTHERN. Sorry never heard of anyone from Murderland considering themselves southern. Yeah maybe south of New York and such but in no way shape or form is this state Southern. Ask for sweet tea and they will look at you like you have 10 heads.
