Do people in Maryland consider themselves North, Southern, or in Between? (Baltimore: real estate, transplants)

Nope,Thurr is a southern dialect word,used in the southern regions of Virginia,states south of it, and even out Midwest.Nearly all African americans are considered southern?? Could you elaborate because that comment didnt make sense to me.

It is also hard to take you serious when you sit and try to insult my intelligence on this issue and matter,now all of sudden you found some useful informative information i posted.Pardon my urban slang as it sometimes can be due to an association with speaking on other board to those who speak with an urban linguistics.Its not about being open to an opinion,its about your refusal to accept the facts and your refusal to accept the fact that there remains a difference between any southern dialect out of the northeastern corridor region and the dialects primarily found in Maryland areas were similar dialects exist because of the northeastern mixture ,even within your own source i found some rather uncovered areas that had an extensive amount of southern dialects due to its migration,yet still also found some informative info regarding other areas i was not to aware of.Anyways i presented my proof and proved my point.The state is northern,southern influences exist as i always stated yes,but are indeed minimal.

Anyways,i think we should just carry on at this point,glad you found some info i posted that you could use.

If you MUST know.. the McDonalds sweet teas were tried in southern states before they were officially put on menus. Just to let you know, MARYLAND was one of those southern states. ANywhere above the Mason D they are called southern sweet teas whereas down here they are just sweet teas.

Additionally, if you want to do some real, hardcore, academic research into linguistics, check out both William Labov's projects at the University of Pennsylvania and Hans Kurath's classic work "The Dialect Atlas of the United States" Both works clearly place Southern Maryland and the lower Eastern Shore into the Southern Dialect region. Nothing personal, but I hold their opinion in higher regard than yours.

Lastly, please stop posting in all caps and in bold font. I don't know how much you know about the internet, but typing this way is the equivilant of yelling at the top of your lungs.

Whats funny is even in NYC,when i first moved there from MD and some people said i was country,there was always someone who said something along the lines of""NO WAY,I BEEN DOWNSOUTH AND HEARD COUNTRY AND HE AINT IT,HE DONT HAVE A NEW YORK ACCENT,BUT HE AINT COUNTRY,NO WAY!"nowadays i have more a tri-state accent having been a NY resident for 6 years.I just laugh,i walk outside of DC and i just get a northern vibe and the energy,currently im in DC visited,i wake up and see all this energy and traffic and people and say this is definetly northern,the attitudes some city residents carry,very city,the usage of the metro system being concurrent to NYC though totally different in looks and etc lol,i walked to good hope rd to the corner store,felt this bitter air,came back inside saw the weather man say next sunday could be a possible snowstorm for DC and said oh yea this is the south

Just to let you know it does snow it the south and it rarely snows on the eastern shore of MD. It snows in Va, Nc, Ak, Tenn, Ky and a few more across the upper south so please dont base it on the fact that it snows here. We are aware that we do not reside in the DEEP SOUTH.. but not everything in the south is the deep south.

And if you must know.. Nashville, Memphis, and Atlanta are all faster-paced cities than Baltimore, I've been and have family in 2 out of the 3.

I went to Salisbury University and the natives have southern accents. And they have HARD "R's" just like that... I told them I'm from Bmore... "Oo.. I've been up thurr.." so.. you're helping prove my point. Thankyou

If you must know,Maryland is not a southern state,you cannot nor will ever discredit the Northeastern corridor so stop trying to debate against facts.

And stop it,Sweet southern tea is not a Maryland thing,go to your average Maryland restaurant ask for some tea,watch they give you NESTEA from the soda machine in the back.Southern tea is not common in Maryland.

Just to correct you,snow is not common in the southern as it is in the northeastern states of Maryland up through Maine.Blizzards are not common in these areas,Nor,easters are huge storms that pound the Northeastern states of Maryland on up through maine(some of Northern virginia.being that its in close proximity)
