I agree with your post 200%. The attitudes and culture of DC and Baltimore are more like Philly than the ATL. The youngins here wear tims (buttas), nike boots, Coogi, Northface jackets. You don't see that as much down south. The accent is definitely a mix of both but probably more northern.

Kids in DC say Get In = Getting; Farvah = Father; Brovah = Brother. This is northeastern street dialect. You can hear the same thing from people who live in Philly and NYC. Other words like Merlin = Maryland; Irk = Eric are more Mid Atlantic. DC and Baltimore and even Philly to a small extent are alike. I am not saying that the culture and accent are the same but certain words are pronounced very similar. Someone from Atlanta or Charlotte does not sound even remotely like someone from DC or Baltimore. Even between Balitmore and DC there are big differences. People in Baltimore say Dug for Dog. Even the street scene, vibe and urban feel of DC and Baltimore are more in line with northeastern cities than southern cities. (Gritty hoods, traffic, row houses, density, public transportation. You don't see this anywhere else but the noth east.

Someone also mentioned Baltimore's affection for gold teeth being southern. People in Bmore had gold teeth before the southern hip hop generation made it popular. I know a lot of people in Brooklyn from back in the day that still wear gold teeth. See Mary J. Blige, Dana Dane and Slick Rick.

Gold teeth was originally a northern style,BMORE and NYC were notorious for rocking golds,the style never really left completely yet died out,recently BMORE and other northeastern cities have been adapting an urban 80's like style with tight jeans and different colored nikes with gold chains(fake of course because real would cost a fortune lol).Southerners are pretty much behind in style and gold teeth and light colored cars are extreme southern styles that new school youngins(new generation)are unaware was originally a northeastern style.Look at Flava Flav the rapper and vh1 star of Flavor of love,he has always been a gold tooth rocking new yorker and is almost 50 years of age.

And i agree with baltimores accent,some black bmorians have mix southern and northern,mid atlantic accents bigtime,many have very northern accents or accents that are just so bland it sounds like it could be from anywere but the south,same with DC though there words are pronounced different.I always felt more of a southern accent was in BMORE than in DC because more BMORE residents come straight from the south than they do in DC,which tends to mix with its natives and northerners,recently in the past years DC is adapting a much more northern feel due to an increase in population and its mixing that is making it a melting pot like many northeastern cities.

As for the style definetly DC style is more northern influence than southern by a longshot,in fact NYC has styles that recently became popular after DC popularized it such as NIKE BOOTS,NEW BALANCES(which are kind of played),and the butter timbs is very northeastern and NORTHFACE COATS are nearly seen only within the northeastern corridor.The dreadlocks thing in southeasterns residents is so tacky and a poor attempt to ride the south which has dreads as a common hairstyle.I personally find it tacky and only Whoopi has the money to keep her ish together lol.

Overall DC/MD is so northern,even to its residents that try so hard to identify with the south i always make fun of them jokingly like YOU ARE NOT SOUTHERN,I DONT CARE HOW MUCH OF A TWANG YOU HAVE,DC IS COLD AS HELL WITH POTENTIAL FOR MAJOR SNOWSTORMS,YOU DO NOT TALK ANYTHING LIKE THEY DO IN A.T.L.Even southeasterns southern twang having residents have lost so much of there southern accent when they go south they are seen as northern because of the BRUVAHS and other northeastern cities street slangs.The flow and energy of DC is so northern,not nyc(no city is energetic like nyc)yet very northeastern,the attitudes,the low interest in religion,the way its built,the winter weathers,the weather period is extremely similar to NYC with the difference being colder windchills within NYC due to 100's feet tall skyscrapers that entrap wind and block the sun.Yes DC/MD is very northern,its southern influences as i said are due to a porportion of its residents being from the south and bringing some of its influences northward.Besides did CRABS become a southern thing? Religion and conservatism politically are big in states VA on down,not in DC on northward states.

My mother is a DC native,though shes been worldwide with my father during her long marriage and military traveling she has never lost her DC accents,when were in NYC some say she sounds southern,others can never pick up were shes from and think she is just a regular new yorker.When we travel south almost everyone that she encounters tells her things like

They definetly tell me that.When we were in New Orleans ,we pronounce it how it is spelled,the residents there laughed at us and said yall city people say it so funny lol!

Uh, New Jersey and New York are also 2 states away from Maryland (and for that matter so is Ohio), so the argument that Maryland is a southern state because it is close to southern areas isn't really valid. It is also close to northern areas.

Maryland is only Southern if you consider anything south of New England to be Southern. That's the traditional definition, going back to Colonial Times. Historians have defined the concept of three Souths -- the Deep South, Middle South and Upper South (stretching all the way into Delaware).

I think that more casually people nowadays distinguish between Northern (New England), Southern (the Deep South), and Mid-Atlantic, which would include Virginia, MD, DC and Delaware (any maybe some other stuff, you all can argue about that if you want).

So, maybe the reason that no one can agree on whether MD is Northern or Southern is that it's neither. It's in the middle.

NO YOU CAN'T!!! This is what's so funny about growing up in Maryland you're either in three groups: 1. Those who try their hardest to act southern when it's not really that southern up here. 2)Those who try their hardest to act like they're from New York and 3)Those who know it's a mix of both here and claim "Mid-Atlantic" or "Northeast Corridor"

Have you ever been up north it seems like that they're more racist up there(Boston and Jersey). Plus Boston is more segregated than B'more and DC. I give you Carolina roots thing but I haven't really met anyone from Kentucky. The Eastern Shore is mostly southern but Baltimore is more northern going by it's skyline and density alone. Going off of personal experience typical people from the places south of MD consider it northern and laugh at people like you who try their hardest to act so "southern". Typical people north of MD thinks MD is southern except for some who actually venture down past MD and into areas like VA and NC and then they say it's in between. Then there's people up in Boston that think New York is "southern"so they think most of the east coast is "southern" and then there's people in Alabama that think North Carolina is "northern"

Southern accents were?? There is no baltimore native with an accent that is remotely similar to a southern accent and thats just factual.The most you ever hear are those with southern or southern alike twangs with words still pronounced in ways a southerner would consider city or northern.Most Maryland accents are generally northern to neutral sounding as they could be be from anywere but the south(especially deep).And who are you to tell me what not to speak on just because i am not from Baltimore.You do not tell me what do i speak on,nor can you be serious to truly think because someone is not from Baltimore they know nothing about the city.Baltimore just like every other northeastern city has a southern influence and transition,that has been common since the early days of Harlem residents ancestors in the 30's and 40's arriving from the south.Baltimore being closer to the south than NYC today has more concentrated southern residents that moved to the city some 10 years ago in which many have lost there heavy southern drawl and retained a mixture,yet still its natives from counties surrounding it have been in the area for decades long and they have northern accents or accents that are very neutral.

Maryland has a climate extremely similar to NYC climate,both areas suffer devastating snowfall due to NOR'EASTERS that ride up the coast,both areas usually see rainfall from the same systems as well as snow or whatever falls.Both areas have seen a dud in its winters in the last past couple of years due to global warming and LA NINA.Maryland humidity and heat is nothing like it is in South Carolina or Virginia and that is just factual based on the equator being closer toward the southern most states than the northern ones.Northernmost southern swamps?? No we have swamps because we are north enough were the swamps become extremely common the further north you travel.the Maryland as well as rural areas of Pennsylvania and even Jersey are extremely swampy and that is because both areas are of the same elevation and are extremely close.Swamps are found in the catskills of NYC and the valleys surrounding the city in jersey lol.Swamps arent too common in the south were usually you find valleys,cornfields and low elevated (yet still high mountainous areas).You will find swamps primarily in Florida,or areas of mississipi and lousianas coast or deep within the state.Swamps are not common after you leave DC on south through Virginia,the most you see are rivers and lakes with a few spotty swampy areas surrounding them.

Oh stop the exaggerated fables man.The racism in Md is no different from racism you will see in any other rural county in NY state as well as other counties in northern states,its just not nearly as common as the racism in VA on down through the southern states.Md is extremely liberal in mindset and the racism here is not comparible at all to the south(especially JENA/LOUISANA).Farms??
