If any visitor is looking for scenic countryside in MD, yesterday, I happened to take Rte 340W (eventually goes south) from Frederick, MD to Harpers Ferry, W. Va., and that is some of the prettiest Maryland countryside I have ever seen, no matter what the season, and I've done that ride in all four seasons. The rolling hills, the farms on Rte 340 just remind you of the pictures they use for landscape jigsaw puzzles. You go over both the Potomac River and the Shenandoah River and in that approximate half hour drive mostly through Maryland, a hair through Virginia and a little bit into West Virginia. It's a part of Maryland that is absolutely stunning.

If you want to make the trip from Baltimore, or Eastern MD, you can get off Rte 70W on Exit 52 (Charles Town) to get on Rte 340W. Rte 340 will take you right into Harpers Ferry and if you go a few miles more, there's a casino and race track in Charles Town right off of Rte 340.. If you go to the casino/race track, go in the day time. It's worth the scenery of Rte 340.

It is ALLEGANY, no "h." Cumberland and Frostburg are all very scenic as well. They are dense historic cities surrounded by forested mountains as far as the eye can see.

I've seen dead towns. Cumberland and Frostburg are far from it. They may not be as lively as they were 50-100 years ago, but they are not dead.

That's funny, I feel pretty alive, as does my wife and kids, my parents, my grandparents, my uncle, my friends, and so on.

Sorry not every part of Maryland is the untouched farm paradise of "Mount Airy"

I drove the highway once....and it seemed alright to me too.

Viewing again on google maps, Myersville area seemed quite pretty with the landscape.

I was staying in Finksburg with a friend back in May and there was some very nice scenery in that area. Same thing up 97 to Gettysburg.

It certainly is. That's my favorite spot in Frederick County. I've got family there so I'm a little biased, though. Some of the hillsides have been dotted with McMansions but overall the valley area is still pretty nice to look at.
