Southern PG county is not a good place to live. I grew up around in Hillcrest Heights and when we first moved there, it was one of the best places to live. I moved to what's supposed to be Fort Washington, but was really Oxon Hill. I lived at Rosecroft Mews, where each of my cars have been attempted stolen twice, The last attempted theft, the theives were still in the car as I was calling the police. PG County police took 45 minutes to come. I ran like my life depened on it to Laurel, where so far I haven't feared for my life on a daily basis. I dont care what no one says, I will never move to southern PG again! I have lived there and experienced it and if you value your peronal property and safety- dont move there. If you have things that you care about, dont move there. I could care less about statistics or anything else, I lived it so I know it. DONT DO IT!!!

I used to live in Fort Washington, MD (MINUTES from the newly developing National Harbor. If you are buying your new home, not only do I think that Fort Washington was a good area to live in, I think it's the BEST city in the DC area to invest in right now!

The National Harbor condos are selling FAST (National Harbor Home Page). The first phase of condos sold all 200+ (I think 250, but not sure) condos in just four weeks! The National Harbor real estate market is not at all affected by the real estate slump that the rest of the country is dealing with. One bedrooms are selling for almost $400,000, but aren't even going to be available for almost another half year...

So (in my opinion) investing in the Harbor's surrounding neighborhoods should be a great investment. This project is going to completely vitalize Fort Washington MD!!! I purchased a single family home in 2003, and am NOW also picking up a condo in the harbor (fleetstreetcondos.com).

So, again, not only do I think it's the smartest place to buy NOW, I also thought it was a great area. Soo many people couldn't believe I was moving to PG County! They thought I was moving in the 'Hood" or something. Nothing could be farther from the truth. I had the best neighbors. This was one of the friendliest, warmest communities I've ever lived in... Until I moved to PG, I ONLY lived in suburban, upper middle class areas of Northern Va my whole life.

Yes, I know some areas of PG (I believe closer to SouthEast DC) are a little rough. However, I've only had positive experiences in Fort Washington MD...

Someone else said this earlier in this thread and I couldn't agree more...

Anywhere in PG would be a great place to live so long as you respect your neighbors and show them courtesy and they do the same for you.

Unfortunately that's not the case in a lot of PG county, and I'm talking about the areas south of College Park and surrounding the 495 Beltway.

I tried hanging out in PG county (all there really is to do is crappy chain restaurants), but realized it really wasn't the type of surrounding I wanted to be in. No, I'm not talking about race, I'm talking about dinner with the missus. I don't like going places and having a bunch of clowns at the doorway trying to stare me down and checking out my lady's backside.

I'd rather go Downtown DC, Rockville, Bethesda. Yeah, more of a yuppie crowd, but not once have I had someone pick a fight with me in those spots. Can't say the same for PG.

Avoid Takoma Park. Avoid Maple Ave. at all costs.

Takoma Park is split between PG, MoCo, and DC. The divide rests along New Hampshire Ave at the Takoma/Langley Crossroads.

^ Actually, I think Takoma Park voted to completely join Montgomery county (a few years back). Of course that didn't change the spill-over crime issues from other jurisdictions.

so you think about moving to Prince George's County, good for you, being a native of Prince George's County and having lived there for over 60 years, that's going to be a tough question to answer, right now it depends on your economic situation and what you're looking for, my suggestion to you and I'm probably going to be ostracized by others or misquote. There are some very good places in and around the Greenbelt area also Glen Dale, Mitchellville, Bowie, Upper Marlboro, Fort Washington, some parts of District Heights and Forestville, Riverdale, Hyattsville, College Park, University Park, Lanham, Landover Hills, Bladensburg, and even Colmar Manor, Cottage City, Mount Rainier. Take your choice, it all depends on what you are looking for, my suggestion to you is to take a little trip and meet with a real estate agent and take a tour of the county.

I think Pg county trades some parts of Takoma Park for some parts of Silver Spring. Alot of folks donot know that some areas of Silver Spring are a part of PG County.

Because there is no part of Silver Spring in PG County...
Takoma Park, Langley Park, Oakview, Hillandale, White Oak, and Adelphi are all closer in to PG County than the Silver Spring limits, but as with much of the area, people want to be looked at by the major area they live in, so they call it Silver Spring.
Growing up, I lived off of Randolph Road for a year. Yes, I technically had a Silver Spring address according to the post office, but it was physically in the Colesville / Fairland area.
It would be like someone who lives in the Cabin John area. You never hear people say they live in Cabin John. They'll most likely say they live in Potomac, or at the very least Bethesda. It's just a matter of people making it more convenient for others to visualize what area they come from.
But yes, all of Takoma Park is in Montgomery County now, and has been since July 1, 1997.
