Casinos are *not* coming to Maryland
Don't hold your breath waiting for casinos in Maryland. The movement is actually for slot machines and there is a *lot* of opposition. This is being proposed as a way to increase revenue for the state, but in reality, just like so many things that happen in government, it is really for the owners of the race tracks and the property where the machines will go.
I was at Charles Town the other night and the track there is not something I think we should be trying to duplicate. I especially don't like the idea of them being built away from the Maryland tracks in new locations. They are looking to put them close to the borders of Maryland on the way to facilities in other states. The idea is to catch gamblers before they leave the state to spend their money elsewhere.
The Birchmere, on the other hand, sounds like a great idea! But to build it in DC or even in downtown Baltimore would be inconvenient for a lot of folks. When I used to live in College Park I would go all the way to the old Birchmere in VA. But the traffic is so much worse now, I would not go anywhere inside the beltway and even College Park would make it undesirable to me. Gaithersburg, on the other hand, would be a great place for any new music!
