Wow a right wing propaganda article from the Washington Times, what a shocker! And from someone who knows nothing about the state other than reading said right wing propaganda! Such sad ignorance about what is only the richest most educated state in the country. Enjoy Mississippi while us normal people live in a prosperous state.

Hell, if these people are so wealthy and knowingly living in a democratic state then they must not be too intelligent. They should expect higher taxes on themselves rather than the lower and middle classes. In fact if I were wealthy I would want more taxes on myself rather than the struggling single mother who can't afford food for kid. The thing conservative must realize is there is a real would out here, seriously.
Yes the US should actually lower taxes on the wealthy and raise on everyone else (flat tax - everyone pays the same). Today the wealthy pay the highest tax rate, and pay most of the taxes in this country. (1% pays like 50% of all income tax).

Also, I think services should be cut, and moved to a tax/fee based system. Example, you have no kids, YOU PAY NO TAX into the educational system. You have kids, you pay a tax because you are using the schools. Have a car? Pay tax on that for the roads, dont take it out of my income tax. What if I take the train everyday, why am I paying income taxes for roads?

etc, etc. I like low tax and fee for service. Maryland is doing high tax and fee for service, and as you can see people will simply just leave the state.

No offense but your example regarding how childless people should be able to not pay into the "school system" is just flat out retarded at best.

The reason why even adults without children are forced to pay taxes to support the school system is because society and the future workforce (and hence economy) benefits as a whole. Otherwise you just end up becoming a third world country like Guatemala or Ecuador, where a sizable number of people don't even have an education past the 6th grade and remain illiterate, and don't have any job skills or critical thinking skills outside of being a laborer or substance farmer.

I think "retarded" is an offensive word, especially when referencing education. But whatever.

The reason all are forced to pay is because of out of control spending and using residents homes as unlimited ATM machines for schools, and covering it with "but its for the children".
Study Backs View That Colleges Absorb Pell Grant Increases With Higher Tuition - News - The Chronicle of Higher Education

Obama has threatened to limit college funding because everytime they increase the grant ceiling college tuitions magically increase as well. I guess K-12 schools/counties arent smart enough to do the same thing? Fee for service is a great way to do that, while also limiting the schools spend.

It should be bragging rights about spending 50,000 per student per year.

Also, taxing for "the good of the people" is b.s. unless used properly. Schools are a poor example (since its schools that drive state budgets into the ground, thus hurting everyone).

Before this becomes another long drawn out battle, you should probably just give it up. The signs are all there. He's not going to get it. He doesn't see the benefits he gets from things he pays taxes for, but does not personally use himself. I've never seen anyone with a cure for that kind of blindness.

Blindness must also be why Obama is threatening to cap benefits to universities. Imean all Americans benefit from the public college education system, so why threaten it?

Its that kind of blindness that allows a good thing (tax support) to become a bad thing (tax dependancy).

Yepp,

Welcome to Maryland.

I myself have tried to run many businesses in Maryland and it wasn't exactly a cake walk in fact it was the complete opposite, I was forced to relocate my main company (which employs over 300 people) to a more business friendly state such as Virginia. The truth is Maryland is chasing out all of it's private industry, which comes as no surprise because most Marylanders seem to be government employed some way or another, another reason Maryland, (at least my area of Annapolis) seems to be one of the most liberal towns in Maryland.

You should visit the Democratic stronghold of Detroit, Michigan. Billions of dollars of welfare money spent in that city and the crime is everywhere.

There's no need to choose Mississippi when Virginia or even North Carolina are more appropriate alternatives to Maryland.

Proportions.

Proportional to income 'the rich', of which I'm a member of, pay very little.

I look at my tenants (friends I moved out here with from MD) taxes. Do I pay more? Sure, because I make a lot more.....but proportionally to my income? Not even close. My tenants (friends), who work 50+ hour work weeks making 40-50k a year, are the ones doing the heavy lifting, not me and my kind.

It's sad.

Fairness is key. It sounds trite, but there's a good reason why the NFL is so successful. (I'm not a fan, for the record)

But hey, I'll keep voting to help extend my wealth in the very long term because its the right thing to do for me and mine for generations - the more fair and well off everyone else is the better me and my family do, long term - but have to sit back and watch our country continue to give people like me breaks and amazingly short term gains (5-30 years) without much long term stability or future growth.

Read up on the America car industries collapse. It gives you a good frame work for what's in our countries future. Short sided policy yielding amazingly huge short term gains for the few. Long term? Well, who cares.....we're making hand over fist, NOW!
