Well it used to be a small neighborhood that had all the little mom and pop stores. I grew up there but that was 30 yrs ago. It still has that feel to it but I think there is less of a community since there are just so many more folks but since I haven't been there in 5 yrs or so since my Mom passed away it would be remiss of me to say exactly how it is now. However 5 yrs ago it had a much higher price tag attached to it than I felt was warranted for the actual house you would be buying.
The houses are generally from the 40s and 50s and they are smallish and suburban but some have a spiffier, i.e. modern, feel to them. It just depends on what is available. There is still some good green spaces so if you can afford it you may be happy there. My folks bought there place back in '59 for 29K and when we had to sell 5 yrs ago it went for 250K and it needed work.
But if you are coming from Tacoma you may be able to meet the price and even gain some. I think I'd miss the new-age small town feel in Tacoma park but then that's me.

I went to the public schools in Silver Spring but it certainly was not recently so best left for others to comment on. Let's just say I was so disillusioned with my education that I choose to homeschool my kids. But then I don't love any public schools.

We have "spoken" already, but I want to say that the neighborhood still has the "small town" feel if you are active in the community. Food is delivered for new moms and play groups are available. There is an active listserve and if you take the time to get to know your neighbors you will love it there. The street I lived on has a block party every year (since I was 8 or so) and other streets have begun to do the same. I would love to live there if I wasn't living in Baltimore now.
