Default montgomery village

This area is getting more run down. Crime rates are rising and schools are NOT very good. If you have children, I'd stay away. We live in a neighborhood very close to Montgomery Village and we will be moving before my daughter starts kindergarten. Good luck!

My sister owns a condo in that area by the golf course. The subdivision itself is quite safe and the neighbors are very friendly; however the area to the south and west of that is not very good.

There have been a lot of robberies occuring nearby the Montgomery Village Shopping Center and off Clubhouse Rd, which is somewhat surprising to hear, as the area seems fairly well kept.

The East Village is much better in terms of safety and the homes are newer. However; I believe the feeder schools here are not good.

TrippingJay - I always read the Gazette etc. too and am surprised to see the number of assaults etc. in the area; although there are usually far more for the Cinnamon Woods area (west of I-270). Sad!

montgomeryvillager - I have a friend who lives on Duffer Way and has never had any problems in his area. 75% of my Boy Scout Troop resides in Montgomery Village and over the past ten years only one person has ever had a crime in his neighborhood and that was something stolen from an open garage in the nighttime.

And my son graduated from Gaithersburg High School and now attends one of the best liberal arts colleges in the country. And people, please, please don't start the old comparing the "W" schools (Wootton, Whitman and Winston Churchill) battle to the others in the county! I like to tell people that the so-called worst schools in our county (no names please) are still heads above some of the rest of the country such as the big Kansas high school my niece attended that had almost no Honors and AP classes for her! Our schools do have problems but they are still ahead of many others!

Though the school systems may hold higher grades in the county does NOT make up for being a great school. I lived in the area for most of my life. Very true that the administrators cover up a lot of the problems that go on. A lot of teachers from Watkins Mill HS has dropped their jobs because of the kind of people that go to that school and the increase of gang problems. My sister and I have been sexually molested or threatened to be raped at school even though we have dressed conservatively (school systems didn't do a lot to help even though we've reported it). Also, MCPS has terrible special ed services and has done little to help those children; I was one of these students a few years ago.

The school system was a huge reason why my parents left for Pennsylvania. We lived near the high school and had our cars vandalized and our townhouse being subjected to be shot with a paint ball gun TWICE. There have been drug problems in the area and we had a neighbor who was evicted for drug dealing in his own home. They still commute to the area because the job offers are a lot better, but they would rather travel far distance just to keep away from the crimes that occur in MV area. Plus affording a huge single family home is the same price as a townhouse in Montgomery county.

I will admit that East Village is a slightly stable community, but the rest of the community has gone downhill tremendously.

My mother just retired from over 20 years teaching in MCPS and her last job involved evaluating teachers in many schools. There is no question that MCPS is facing more problems than ever with violence and overwhelmed by the problems of exploding special education and english-as-2nd-language instruction needed. It used to be ranked one of the best systems in the USA. But that is not true anymore, though they are by no means terrible.
Also, Montgomery Village is a bit rundown and facing its own problems. It's a 70s subdivision with few sidewalks. There are alot of other places in Montgomery County on the red line I would look first if I worked downtown: Bethesda, Grovesnor, White Flint, Rockville. I grew up in Takoma Park, closer to jobs in DC but it's an acquired taste.
Fact is that upcounty is changing fast. It used to be an underpopulated land of cornfields, 2 lane roads and "white" kids when we played them in county scholastic sports back in the 80s. Now it is a land of sprawling subdivisions, traffic jams on 8 lane boulevards populated by immigrants and their children seeking the good life in suburbia at affordable prices.
I think you should look around. Your 400k can buy something better closer to your work.

Default Montgomery Village

I've lived in Montgomery Village for 23 years. I want to move out. As others have posted the area is a little run down. The foundation is dealing with budget problems. Montgomery County has a problem with gangs - I've heard 19 different gangs so far. However, there are great churches in the area. Traffic has gotten worse. Newer communities north of here have caused increased congestion. I have a gang member living behind me and have seen the guy in broad daylight dealing drugs. It's not the same place when we first moved here. It's a shame.

I would not move to Mont. Village if I had small children. I am a teacher in the county and would not sent my children to any schools in most of Gaithersburg. Wooton High is far superior to Gaithersburg High
