So the table has been set for November and we are about to embark on some major issues to vote on:

  • Redistricting
  • Same-sex marriage
  • MD Dream Act
  • 6th Casino
Where do you all rank this election in importance of how this will shape Maryland going forward?

- Redistricing: Paper Tiger referendum. All that could be accomplished is sending the map back to MOM to redo over again. Nothing signficant would change.

- Same-sex marriage: Will be approved. All of the poll numbers indicate this.

- MD Dream Act: Should be very close.

- 6th casino: What difference does one more make? I expect this to pass too.

I don't think this election matters that much as it is a Presidential year. The elections that matter on a state level are the off-cycle ones where the voters rubber stamp the Dems back to Annapolis. Maryland has been going in one direction for a long time, sharp left hand turns, I don't expect any course corrections now.

The only "major issue" is that so many think these are major issues.

1) The dream act is about illegals which is STILL about Congress doing something about the 14th.
As Congress isn't willing to actually fix the real problem the states are left to deal at the other.
2) Redistricting is pure politics. Letting this out of the GA is a failure of the opposition.
3) Casino's. What... no one saw this coming?
4) Same Sex marriage is about semantics. The underlying 98% is civil unions which is civil rights.
Once that is sorted out then the appeals courts can argue the linguistics and solve the last 2%.

The black democrats in PG & Baltimore City will determine if Same-Sex marriage passes or not. I expect this vote to be real close.

No, the most important election was in 2006 which gave O' Malley his first term.

1858. Gave Md the legislature and governor who attempted to maintain neutrality in 1860. They failed, and ultimately gave in (thankfully), but its possible to imagine a different legislature doing worse by resisting Lincoln more violently (not sure if folks actually on the ballot would have done worse)

You're right.

Though I think it should be in the next ballot since most people nowadays are opening their views to the drug.

No, the only major Maryland figure up for election is Ben Cardin, who will win in a walk.

Redistricting is kind of a toothless referendum, not a sweeping law that would put some independent commission in place or something like that. When it passes, it will be the same Dem governor and legislature making a new map and the worst case scenario is Maryland going back to a 6-2 Dem delegation.

Same sex marriage probably won't pass, the bigoted white people and bigoted black people will finally find something they agree on. It's only a matter of time anyway, I doubt we'll be waiting more than 10 years for this.

The casino is probably the big one, I have no idea if that will pass.

MD Dream Act is the least significant, I'd bet anyone here there will be a national Dream Act of sorts passed by 2016 rendering this one mostly moot.
