Question about Prince George's County
I always see on the internet/TV/etc... that PG county is the wealthiest majority black county in the country. This is my question: is it also the largest (population, not land area) ? According to the Census Bureau, in 2006, the county had 841,315 people and was 64.6 black. I may be wrong, but I think that makes PG the biggest predominantly black county in America. If this is the case, why is that never mentioned when the fact that it is the wealthiest AA county is brought up all the time?

I'm not sure if it's the largest, but it's definitely the wealthiest (by household and per-capita income) majority AA county in the US. It's also in the top 2% incomewise for all counties regardless of race.

PG is indeed the largest majority-black county in the nation. DeKalk County, Georgia, with around 100,000 fewer residents would be the runner up. As far as why it's not touted as much, I would say it's because saying a county is large doesn't really give it any added cache. It's not really an accomplishment that reflects either positively or negatively on a community for it to simply have a large number of people, whereas stating that the county is the wealthiest majority-black county is a positive and valued "achievement".

Good question
This got me curious so I did a little research. In 2000 there were 96 majority-black counties in the U.S. I didn't read the entire document, but I don't think there is any data on the total population of the counties. Of the 96 counties, 95 were in the south. Prince George's is mentioned as one of two "metropolitan" counties. Baltimore City (considered a county for the study) was the other.

PG Not Largest Black County
You guys overlooked Shelby County, TN with a 52% black population and over 910,000 people is the largest majority black county.
The largest county of which Blacks make up the largest group is actually Kings County (Brooklyn) with 38% black (white non-hispanic 36%, Hispanic 19%)
Followed by Philadelphia County (city) with 45% black (39% white non-hispanic)

Shelby County Tenn is nothing to talk about.
Pg county is the wealthiest out of all the majority AA county. I can care less about how many AA lives in a county I care more about the income.
I live in PG county and I can tell you their are plenty of rich, educated young AA living here.
Now we can not say the same for Shelby county Tenn.

Pg county have a new County Executive who is taking the county to a whole new level.
The county is starting to attract larger companies and the federal government. As a matter of fact the federal Government will expand Andrews Air force base and bring in more county offices and jobs to the county.
PG county schools are also improving as well. I live in PG county and this is the only county where I have seen for miles nothing but wealthy blacks living the American dream driving nothing but the best and living in the best homes. Now there are excellent schools in Pg county. Pg county have plenty of Blue ribbon schools as well.
I think one of the issue why it seems PG county is not rank as one of the best school district is because the lower income areas have majority of the schools in Pg county vs Montgomery county where the higher income areas have majority of the schools in the county. What Pg county is doing now is only building new schools in the higher income areas.
I love living in PG county and I am getting my monies worth living here.
One of the reason I love living here is been surrounded my wealthy black people my own people. In my community the neighbor on my left is a very young principal. The neighbor on my right is a very young CEO. The neighbor 2nd from my right is a lawyer. The neighbor 2nd from my left is a very young computer science person. I have 3 doctors in my community. I would say 98% of the families in my community are under 40 yrs old very successful family going people. The media will try to talk bad about the black race and I wanted my son to the the other side. My son will be raised to know that not every black person need welfare. We do not and my husband and I are under 35 yrs old. We live in a 5500 square feet home, we own 2 very successful companies. We are so proud to live in PG county.

lscalder, all this is fine and good and certainly something to be proud of. I used to call Mitchellville "Mercedesville" in the 90's because it seemed like everyone there drove one. But as was pointed out in another thread, this county is filled with "pockets of poverty" and so many of our people, our young black people have been left out. They have no hope. So many of our race are doing really well but I don't feel enough has been done to reach back and help others. Shoot, I feel left out sometimes.
I remember when the stadium was built right in the middle of my neighborhood. There were politicians out and community events and all of this talk about how they were going to do this and that for the youth of Landover and how the children would have a place to be after school (Sport and Learning Complex). That place opened and almost everything there was out of my price range. This has bothered me for a number of years now and I never voiced my opinion. Now with reading comments on this forum and talking with others at work I am ready to step out and do something!!
I was asked to run for a County position. I don't think I have a politician type personality but I do intend to make my voice heard. Watch out now!!

I am sorry you feel left out sometimes but I have seen a big change in the Black race that I am proud of. MY husband was raised on welfare/section8/food stamp you name it he was raised on. His father was on crack since he was born. MY husband graduated from high school with a 3.8GPA went on to college got his B.S in Computer Engineer. He started his own successful business so when he started a family we can have the American dream. I remember 4 yrs ago he always dreamed of owning a 5500 square feet home. 2 yrs ago our business boomed and now we live in 5500 square feet home. We worked hard for what we have and I hate it when people generalize the entire race as a whole.
I think you should run if that is your dream. I am proud of my race. We as a whole have come so far. Who ever imagine having a Black man such as Barack Obama making history No one. We have come so far but yet their are still people out there who still generalize Blacks as one.
