Girl, thanks for posting that. My wife and I took a 3 day weekend the first of August; did the train in Cumberland and then stayed at Carmel Cove Inn in Deep Creek. Really, really love the area. I wonder if they need a flower shop out there? lol

Girl, thank you for chosing Cumberland and specifically for deciding to reinvest in the community by purchasing and rehabing an older house. Needless to say I am a big fan of Cumberland and the West Side especially (although Westsideboy actually lives in South End, but that is another story entirely.)
Your observations of the area, both positive and negative, were astute and accurate. Good luck in town, and PM me if you have any questions.

Girl on the go- I'm moving to Cumberland in June and enjoyed reading about your experiences. We're moving from MN due to my husbands job transfer to ABL. I have a daughter going into 4th grade next year and was wondering what you decided about schools, how many you looked into and what you thought. We visited about a month ago and also stayed at the Rocky Gap Resort and loved the downtown area and City Lights.

Any information on the Chamber of Commerce in Cumberland, or the area east ( Flintstone?)
or some real estat agencies in the area? Also, what are the prices of acreage and land taxes in the area? Any government incentives for business relocation there? I love the area
and pass through many times on my way to Tyler County W.V.

The Cumberland Chamber is very active in the public/private partnership in the area. Alot of their focus is promoting the area and local businesses through tourism and destination marketing. What specifically do you want to know about them?
Allegany County east of Cumberland is very rural, forested and mountainous. Flintstone, Oldtown, and Little Orleans are the only villages out there. and none has more than a couple of hundred people, everyone else lives in the valleys, hollows, or up on the hills.
The biggest real estate agencies are Century 21 and Coldwell Banker. Weirdly, there is no such thing as a buyer's agent up here. The best you will do is a cooperating sellers agent who will not advise you on what to offer for property. It is hard for me to give the prices of raw land. I see ads in the paper, but most of these listing are optimistic prices meant for out-of-towners. You will probably have to get the listings for an agent, research recent land sales, and figure out for yourself what a fair price is.
There are many incentives for businesses in Cumberland and Allegany County. If you are serious about pursuing them, let me know and I will send you the contact information.

Cumberland is not a bad place to live. It has its' typical crime. Yes they have drugs, some gang activity, and similar things to big city but it just don't surface as much. The schools are pretty good. Yes they are putting the hospital in and consolidating 2. Close to Deep Creek. Housing is cheap. Decent paying jobs are hard to come by thus why I commute. Been living here since I was a kid. Any questions, send me a message.

Just asking
I may have a great job offer in Cumberland but I'm a little concern. Are their any African-Americans and/or Hispanics there? and do you honestly believe that they are accepting of them? and what about the surrounding areas?

Just based on the numbers Cumberland is 92% white 5% black and less than 1% Hispanic. Allegany County as a whole is about 96% white 2% black (the census will say differently because they include the incarcerated black population in the state prisons located in Cresaptown)
Cumberland and Frostburg both have small, but long standing and well accepted black communties, churches, and organizations. These two cities and Keyser WV and Piedmont WV, located right on the Potomac, are the only places with a noticable minority populaton within about 60 miles in any direction.
Cumberland has been given a "black eye" by the metro region newspapers for a two incidents that happened in the last year, which I can go into detail on if you wish. Overall though in Cumberland and Frostburg people of color blend pretty easily into the community
